I installed then in front and they do protect the paintwork a bit from stones. IMO painting them to body color would look silly (ricy), as black they dont stick out visually.
I didn't install them to rear as the rear pieces look to long to my eye and as they are molded you really cant cut them shorter and hope to get a good result.
I don't have 'em, but if I were to get them, I imagine I would leave them black like Mojo's. As is evident from Mojo's pics (but something that I was previously unaware of), the flaps do NOT 100% protect the paint from mud, etc. being flung up. That said, I'd be more concerned with protecting the paint - i.e., Clear Armour, Stone Guard, etc.

I agree, Mine were originally painted body color. After few months they get all chiped, etc.
SURE GLAD MINE ARE NOW BLACK
I guess I'll be the one to stand out from the crowd - I like mine better now that I just painted them to match. Red. I'll get a pic uploaded soon and point to it. The things were on the car when I bought it (5 year's ago) - black. It took awhile, but I got used to them there. I removed them when I painted it this spring with the intention of leaving them off - but it looked strange without them...so.. I shot them to match and put them back on there. I like it. As for protection, they are better than nothing, but do NOT do a great job - particularly the fronts. The Backs do OK - the fronts still let the rockers and lower part of the door get beat up. I added a rubber flap at one point to extend the fronts even lower and That didn't do much to help either - I think an effective solution would almost have to be dragging on the ground to work! Live with it I guess, and plan to repaint the rockers and lower doors every 100K or so....
The previous owner of my car installed them and I have actually considered taking them off, but I have noticed that the rocker panels on c4's that don't have them do look considerably worse.
I have the non-molded type similar to those on MrMojo's Vette.
They do a pretty good job of protecting the rockers and rear quarter and don't look bad on a white Vette.
Also, they mount using stock holes so no drilling and no rubbing on the painted surfaces.
The only downside is that my rear stone guards have taken ons a curvature, possibly due to too many burnouts at the strip; the fronts are still straight.
nope...takes away from smooth lines. 125000 miles on mine, and there is hardly and chips. my chips are on the lower front part of hood. i don't drive dirt roads and i try real hard to keep my distance from vehicles in front of me
im a fan.have flat ones on still but molded ones in a package in the garage.
i prefer the painted look molded ones with the tire side painted in black undercoating to hide any chipping and also muffle ticky sounds from rocks.
we run some gravel here. they're a no brainer.
many parking lots arent paved here either and all it takes is a few feet of d1 and your tires are loaded (unless you got hard wore out ones).
the 8.5 in front wheeled c4s might not sling as much as the 9.5s.just a thought.
I put black molded ones on my yellow '87 after I had it repainted. The rocker panels were pretty beat up and took some work in the body shop to restore them. I have 9.5" wheels on all 4 and the molded guards do a fairly good job at stopping the stone chips. Took awhile to get used to the look, but my car is a daily driver and I wouldn't be without them now.
