I start the car in the morning and it seems to run fine. I drive for a few miles, When I shut the car off and go in the store. When I come out it starts fine but I put it in gear and try to take off it just dies. it acts like it trying to flood out. It always after it warm. I have alway had to hold the gas wide open to start. Do you think the map sensor is going bad. The car always runs rich. thanks
not sure, but maybe someone can answer you if it has happened to them before. could be 3 or 4 things. start simple and work you way to a complete engine change
Well so far I got the timing set. I have replace the plugs, ignition module, cap and rotor. Runs fine until it gets up to temp. Then it runs so rich it stumbles and cuts out. Some times you can't even get it to move without it dying when you give it gas. it blows the blackest smoke out when its warmed up and you try to give it throttle. It's runs very very rich. I going to have new exhaust put on it tuesday. I do not get any codes at all. I was getting a code 42. By the book it says it either the ignition module or the ecm. So thats when I replaced the ignition module. So now I'm lost. I have read several threads on rich conditions. Some threads say it a o2 sensor. some threads it can be the computer. Some say that its can be the temp sensor. I not sure what to buy and try next. The o2 or get another ecm.
Coolant temp sensor would be my next item to try $7 at most parts stores and easy to change, also, it will severely affect fueling and never throw a code while doing it.
its a 1990. I will go get temp sensor in the am and change it and let you all know. thanks.
Heh, figured it was a speed density system from the description of your problem...been there done that. The reason it gets bad when warmed up is that the ECM isn't using the temp data from the sensor until it reaches closed loop temp, then it uses it for fueling, that's when things go haywire.
I believe it was the temp sensor. It's 8:30 at night and about 75 outside right now. I will drive tomorrow when it is 90 out and see what my results are. Thanks everyone, I wouldn't never figure it out without the forums.
Man, guys. I took for a ride today and it ran just awsome. Car runs perfect. After all that, just to find out that it was a $7 temp sensor. So I treated her to a new exhaust and she sounds awsome. I want to thank all of you for the help and the the forum for having so many people to help. I would have spent a hell of alot of $$$ without the forums. Thanks.

That sensor on a SD car will drive you nuts, the fans will act normal, it'll run fine open loop but get worse and worse as the engine gets warmer. Acts almost like an ignition miss at times too.
