When I use my AC, the compressor throws a black grease on the hood and surrounding area. It has been doing this for a couple of years, and I've just cleaned it when detailing the engine. The AC works great, but now I'm living in AZ and don't want to have it fail during the summer months. Is the grease coming from the compressor clutch or is it oil and is there an easy fix without replacing the compressor?

Thanks in advance for the help
I'm currently having the same problem and it was getting worse and worse....... moral of story: new compressor.
You don't know how much oil it's losing, so it's hard to get the right amount back in and that increases the wear on the internal parts and can plug up the orifice. Also, if it goes on for too long, it'll wear a groove in the shaft and though you could probably find a replacement somewhere, you might as well chuck it and buy a rebuilt or new if that's happened. Here's the site I posted the other day of guy fixing one (it's a different model Nippendenso, but the nose is the same):
The only special tools you need - other than a vacuum pump and a manifold gage set to get it recharged - are some snap ring pliers. It would probably be a good idea to put a new Accumulator on it at the same time and removing the orifice and getting the metal out of the screen would be a good idea too.
