Hi guys,

I live in a place where I must have a front license plate, but I like the look of a plain Vette front bumper so I found this item:

Do you guys have an experience with this ?
Does it look nice ? How does it go with time ?

Thanks

I have it, it's better than those flat ones and it follows the lines of the car.

I got mine from Zip. They have a link on the CF page. They are clear and cost 26.95.

I'm in Illinois and we have a front plate rule too, but there seems to be an understanding with the cops, that some cars are just too pretty for it.

To those who have it I have 2 questions :
- Does the plastic fade with time or does it stay as clear as the first day ?
- How is it with rock chips ?

Thx

That's the truth! I have a '94 coupe, an '03 MB e500, and an '04 Escalade. None of them have front plates and I have never been hassled about it. I live in Naperville. (IL)

A fellow club member has one of those clear plate covers on his 95 but he painted the inside of the cover in body color and left a clear area just big enough to see the plate numbers. Here in WA, we don't have front registration tabs but the plate is required.

Definitely makes a difference in the look of the front end but still allows the plate to be seen.

I have the same one. Treated it with Rejex and almost 3 years later it still looks great. I like it and would recommend it.

Oh yeah...

as far as rock chips are concerned: the plastic that the plate cover is made out of is really pretty thin and flexible. Rocks pretty much just bounce right off without a problem. Also, they are cheap enough ( if $25 is cheap), so if mine ever starts to look like crap, I'll just buy a new one.

A friend of mine just got hassled by a statey for no front plate here in central Illinois just the other day. Course, the 68 in a 55 didn't help either. He got warning tickets for both. He's got a front plate now.

There was a bill in the Illinois legislature to exempt Corvettes from the front plate rule. I wonder what happened to that.

Yah, I have one of these on my '94. I don't like it as well as the factory cover, but Maryland requires a front tag. Lotsa guys here disregard that law, but I don't want to give the lawmen any stupid reasons to light me up.

What I think is good about this clear cover:

1. It basically mimics the contour of the factory cover, and looks much better than the car looks with just the bare tag on front, which is a look I simply hate. I think the late-C4 front end looks great with the factory tag cover on, but a bare tag just ruins the looks of the front end.

2. It is fairly flexible, so stuff seems to bounce off of it pretty well.

What I think is not so good about it:

1. It stands a bit proud of the bumper, rather than sitting flush with it as the factory tag cover does. :-/

2. It scratches easily. I've been cleaning bugs off of mine with wet paper towels, and I noticed when I cleaned it last night that it's getting micro-scratches in it. I'll be exploring gentler ways to clean it from now on.

3. If I don't remove it before I was the car, it fogs up very badly on its inside surface. I've learned to remove it before I wash the car.

I bought mine from Ecklers for ~$21.xx. Mid America sells it for around the same price.

Be well,

SJW
