The hatch moldings and the (Atari) dash, maybe the windshield header and the roof, all talk to me from time to time. I haven't yet done anything special to stop it, but I am ready. So I was wondering what others have done to quiet down the plastic parts. I've heard of using velcro where the parts contact each other, and I've thought of applying a bead of silicone and letting it cure before assembly. What have you done, or what do you know of that will stop the voices?
Well, I agree that drowning it out works great. When the targa top is off, and the scenery is going by at 75, there are no noises at all! Sadly, not all my driving is like that.
I have only one rattle left to find and fixed a couple. When driving press around the area that you are hearing the rattle from. If you can cause the noise to stop, try putting a folded up napkin in there. If that helps then come back with some black RTV or velco. My top creaked a little bit, silicone grease helped that as did adjusting it's fit. I think it's madvet.com that sells late c4 targa anti rattle rubbers for the earlier years. Sometimes to fix a rattle all you need to do is tighten the screws holding the moulding down!
I have a rattle in the back that I am thinking is possibly the antenna. I checked everything inside the car, even remove the tounoue (sp) cover.
Okay, okay, it's helpless right? I'm going to try a few things that let me keep my car and drive it, and I'll let jooz gize know.
Thanks for actually trying Aardwolf. I know about the MidAmerica roof tabs, and I will probably buy them. I've already got a wad of rolled up dollar bills holding my gauge bezel still. I was (and still am) looking for a tried and true fix for silencing all the plastic-on-plastic joints.

The Helms manual says to use a thin felt covered tape for plastic on plastic squeeks, anyone know where to buy some? Velcro works but is too thick in some areas to be used.

A place called MICHAEL'S here has packed sheets of thin felt w/stick tape backing in white and blk. Probably any craft store would carry it
Got some mad squeaks from the hatch glass. I had recently changed the weatherstrip, and thought that would eliminate that, but it didn't. I used a silicone lubricant on the gasket, and it seems to help a little. Had some high temps here recently, and the squeak went away!!! There is just to much flex in the c4 to eliminate the various squeaks I guess....
rich, see the post from "redeasysport" and have him come over... he took care of 'em all

Get some industrial velcrow(about 2inches wide by 6ft long)It is your friend.Cut it (the soft side)and put it behind near the bolt entry holes on any plastic part that squeaks.Replace your rubber pads on the hood.Replace your wiper arms if they are loose.Di electric grease on all weather stripping. Lube all door hardware. Make sure there are no loose harness pieces rattling near the firewall.Tighten all screws on the interior.Inspect all front end bushings and bolts including anti rattle clips on the calipers.Make sure all meatal lines under the hood are secured properly most have screws and I found some loose.
Redeasysport, Thanks for the reply. Sounds like you have done the whole tour. I will be starting with the interior parts and the roof. Then maybe I'll hear the other stuff talking. Where did you buy industrial velcro?
While I was fielding the inevitable wisecracks earlier, I contacted a company that sells UHMW pressure sensitive tape. UHMW, (ultra high molecular weight polyethylene), is very slippery and durable. I had some experience with the material a while ago. I will try using it where the clearances are tight. The tape is .007" thick.

I used a small dab of silicone on the plastic parts on my 86 and assembled them about 20 mins after (silicone was still tacky).
Worked perfectly no more creaks and a nice clean solution.

I've done a lot of those and they do work. I think what helped me the most was doing a targa top alignment. That thing used to rattle and squeak all the time. Basically involves finding a flat surface to park, remove the top and the interior trim (will involve the sun visors and mirror also). Loosen the bolts that hold the attachment points on the top and set the top in place. Tighten the top (using the correct pattern), then (this is where the trim removal come in) tighten the bolts for the front attachment points. Remove the top, replace all the trim, put the top back in and go for a ride. Someone (scoob I think) had a post a few years ago that even had pics.
