I am getting blue smoke at start up out of both sides of the exhaust but not after it gets warm. Only after it sits awhile. My first guess is valve seals. My buddy say intake leak. Any ideas out there!! for a 1987 L98 Can valve seals be installed on the car without taking the heads off??
Thanks ahead of time
Gene
To check for an intake leak spray carb cleaner around the intake and see if it surges. Unfortunetly I dont think it's intake leak for blue smoke. Blue smoke = oil.
Definately valve seals. I just did mine on an 87 with 107K. The hardest part is getting the covers off. Check out the tech tips and search on valve seals on this site and Google it. There are plenty of site with info on how to do it and how to adjust the valves. Some tips:
Take your time- This is not a rush job for a novice.
Auto zone has the screw down spring compressor for rent.
The little rubber O rings go on after you set the spring over the valve and just before you put the keeper back on. - Don't loose a keeper
Plug the oil drains and clean out the head. The old O rings crumble when taking them off.
Use the rope trick and make sure each piston is at TDC for each cylinder you do. I tried the air trick but I couldn't get the fixture into 4 cylinders and then it would back up on me and the compressor had to run constantly and the noise drove me nuts. With the piston at TDC you can't drop a valve.
Good luck. It took 2 good days to finish mine up. No more embarassing smoke on startup.

I did my `87 with the "rope trick". The job was "doable", and yes it was a royal PIA
