Lukoil
Ok, so where are we going to buy our oil from now on. I just heard that Lukoil?? has bought out Mobil ( which was owned by Tosco ), and are in the process of changing all the stations over to this new name. I heard that this is either an indian (from India) company, or a Pakistani company. Not sure about that part though. What is their synthetic oil going to be called--- Luk-1 ???. Looks like we may have to use another brand in our `Vettes

Interesting... I'll be curious to see what develops out of this, but I suspect that the name Mobil-1 will stay the same - that is, if they ever want to sell any again.
People bitch about buying American, but have no problem selling out to foreign companies. Anybody want to guess how many 100% American companies exist the the USA? Not many.
Very very few are actually selling anything resembling American oil. Sinclair oil out of Wyoming is the only one I would truly consider American. I drill wells offshore and right now everyone is in Nigeria . And they're all affiliated in one way or the other so I for one would say that the Mobil 1 name will probably go one for a long time. Otherwise I'll have to change the underhood emblem... They are all pretty much equal as long as a good synthetic.
it would be bad publicity to change the name... all this buying out is the way of the world. in 1984 they broke up at&t for being too big into 7 different companies. now verizon and qwest are buying them back up and soon we'll be back to 2.. the world is nuts.
But, as we've read, not all synthetics are from the same base or components. Oh ,who cares?
Actually, I did find an article on LukOil. They're "re-badging" Mobil gas stations up and down the east coast. Then, Getty oil stations will change to LukOil stations. By the time this is all finished, Luk will have over 2000 stations on the east coast. Part of the Exxon/Mobil divestiture plan.
Pretty sure it doesn't affect the oil in the can which, as said, comes from wherever, Nigeria, Alaska, Gulf, etc.

Lukoil is a Russian company, Mobil and Exxon merged in 1999 (ExxonMobil - XOM). With a market value of approximately $378 Billion XOM is not a likely candidate for a takeover I believe what is happening is Lukoil is buying certain "surplus" Mobil service stations.

Hmmm- they are surplusin their asses off in my neck of the woods. Every Mobil is being converted, & every Exxon is being shut down

Well if they call it Luk-1, I'd guess we'd have to "Use the force".
"Lukoil, Russia's largest oil producer, operates a network of more than 2,000 gasoline stations from Maine to Virginia. The service stations, which sell under the Mobil and Getty brands, are being converted to the Lukoil name. The Moscow-based company is no longer state owned." Link

But for the fact that Russia is supposedly "broke", $300 billion for Exxon/Mobil isn't really too much for a country to buy a company, if they choose to. And, as we know, many countries own their companies, even if it claims they no longer own the company.

They probably bought it with US "Foreign Aid" money. So that means all us taxpayers have an interest in it. Dont' hold your breath for any dividends, though.
Also just read that Cnooc (Chinese) is now trying to take over Unocal.

Valero's an oil and gas exploration company out of San Antonio. They've been around a long time, one of those Texas oily companies. One of the combos/mergers of oil companies allowed Valero to step up and become a retailer in their own name. I think prior to putting their names on stations they did own stations under more "branded" names. Some companies like the "free" advertising of putting their name out there.
Kinda the reverse of companies such as Fina and Exxon. A Fina exec once told me that after Exxon Valdiz (sp?) incident, he told his folks to take the Fina name off all tankers so that if there was an accident, the company would skate. Nice guy, huh?
