Default CC Unit cleaning question

I am one of the many that have been having problems with my AC buttons working on a regular basis, well anyway I'm in the process of doing the cleaning procedure and I'm not sure "Do I clean the circuit board where the buttons contact, or do I clean those little black things in the rubber piece that actually hit the cicuit board when the buttons are pushed?", or for that matter "Do I clean both?". The whole process has been easy so far, I just dont wanna mess anything up, I know those circuit boards are kinda sensitive.

From what I understand you just clean the gold-colored contacts on the "male" portion of the connecter. I tried that with no luck. The AC still works fine on my 87 but the display either goes blank or rolls through all the numbers most of the time.

I just cleaned the PCB card edge fingers.

TV tuner contact cleaner has a lube as well as solvent but I don't know if that would be detremental to rubber??

No offense, but now I'm even more confused, I'll see if I can find the original post that this cleaning procedure is in. If i find it I'll just post my problem in there.

What I've cleaned (twice in 2 years) is the *actual* circuit board. You see the dark-greyish spots where the buttons touch and the "roadways" that connect all of the grey areas? I gently wiped all of those with some rubbing alcohol pads, then lightly went over it with a soft pencil eraser (the whole board), and then with the alcohol again to clean off any eraser shavings.

Each time I've done this, the CC unit was useless before the cleaning. Each time after, it has worked as new. Be careful, but don't be too ginger with it - you have to clean it, afterall. PM me or email me if you have any more questions, and I'll try to help however I can.

Thanks Perfusion, I went ahead and wiped it all down and it does come on every time I push any of the buttons, however I think its stuck on one setting because the air blows out the defrosters and the floor every time, no matter what buttons I push. I may do it over again and give it a little better cleaning, becuase I was pretty gentle with it. I basically needed it to turn on everytime so I can get it charged, and now it does that, thanks again.

Glad you got the buttons working again - I thought they would. However, your "other" problem - i.e., the air only blowing out of the floow and defroster - sounds like a separate issue from the CC unit. Hopefully some HVAC experts will chime in here, but IIRC it's a vaccuum line issue. Go ahead and reclean the board again just to be sure, but in my experience, if all of the different lights above the buttons light up as directed, the CC unit is working properly. If you're not getting the air flow you want, that's another problem.

Yeah, that makes sense and it sounds like my luck. I'm going to reclean it, and if that doesnt work, hopefully someone here will be able to point me in the right direction on how to fix it, thanks again.
