Default "jack Stand Safety" — Update

I'm looking at a "2 1/2 TON HYDRAULIC JACK" and a couple pairs of 3 TON
STANDS at SEARS. The JACKS maximum ht. is 14.5". It costs only $39.99
and is made by "CRAFTSMAN". IS THIS "JACK" ADEQUATE ENOUGH and is
14.5 inches enough room to comfortly work under the car?

APPRECIATION UPDATE:
THANKYOU EVERYONE for all the replies to this THREAD. This information was definitely NEEDED and APPRECIATED. Weighing all the input from this
vastly EXPERIENCED FORUM, I settled on a CRAFTSMAN 3 TON JACK & 4 —
3 TON JACK STANDS, all with maximum lift of 21 inches. I don't have
access to a garage or driveway, so my good wife and I went to a hospital
garage that I have used before when BAD WEATHER was expected, (deep
snow, hail, hurricanes, etc.). I drove up to the 4th floor where there was
lots of space, hard concrete floors and no distractions being that it was
early Sunday a.m. Using the "HOW TO JACK-UP A ZR-1" by J. Michael Hom,
and the information in this THREAD, everything went SAFE & SMOOTH. One
thing though, the "infamous" Haynes Corvette Manual led me to believe I
had to put the car on "all fours". When are they going to UPDATE
that thing. I will be getting a HELMS MANUAL. YOU GUYS ARE
GREAT! MANY UPS!

I use the 6 ton stands even though it's overkill. Those have a max height of over 20". I needed that height to pull the front spring out. Usually, a 3 ton jack is needed to get to that height. Here's a pic, sorry it's kinda dark:

Well 2.5 tons is 5,000lbs or about 1,500lbs more than the total weight of a C4 so it is adequate to lift either end easily.

Though 14" isn't much room, if you jack the car at one side point the front or rear (depending on where jacked) will be more than that height off the floor.

Overkill is okay when you're talking jacks & jackstands. I also use 6 ton stands and a pair of jacks that get the car way up. I'm not sure what my 5 ton jack raises to but it's a great bargain from Harbor Freight.

I've got 4 of the Craftsman 3 ton stands that go up to almost 21". 2 came with the 3 ton floor jack (commercial like), a little scooter chair, jumper cables, wheel chucks, etc. for $99.99 on sale.

The 2 2 1/2 ton stands only go to about 14.5 (like you listed) and they came with the smaller 21" quick lift SUV style jack I bought. I think it was like $69.99 for the set on sale.

I just picked up the matching pair of 3 ton stands, but I think they were only like $19.99 regular price. $39.99 seems a bit high for the stands you listed (unless the jacks included).

I will say, I do like the extra height though. It just makes things easier and if you have to pull the exhaust or tranny, you'll need all the room you can get!

YEAH BABE! REAL NICE GARAGE! If I had one like that, I'd have a bed there
so I could "sleep next to my baby". Looks as though you change and
mount your tires yourself.

Think AC Hydraulic.

The jack reaches 30" and the stands are capable of over 30".

I pulled and replaced the exhaust, tranny and engine with just 12.5" of frame clearance. 12.5" is the minimum height to maneuver an auto bellhousing from underneath the chassis (converter removed). Trust me.

I did it once... BUT WILL NEVER DO IT AGAIN!!

It's a total bitch. You've got to get at least 24" if you're over 30 years old. The more height the better. Spend the money on some high lift jacks.

My new house is getting a four-point lift. Screw scooting around on your back

Header companies all used to tell you to get it up aprrox. 24" Ive done it at less, same w/trans and yes it can be done but huge PITA
I used to worry bout it myself and kept at least one floor jack under front member or rear end w/a little pressure off the stands for stability

Dan P. I was looking at the drive up four post myself

The link that bogus posted has some real nice gear. The ac. floor jacks plate set-up and 3 1/2"- 30" height is awesome!!

One day when I reconfigure my garage for more depth, I'm getting one! I am petrified that the car will come down on me. Hence the 6 ton stands. I also keep the jack extended at some point near where I am working just for that extra bit of protection. Some use a tire and wheel. I've got a 54" chest, I need every BIT of height I can get to do anything under the car!

Some members express added concern even after vehicle is SAFELY
SUPPORTED and PROPERLY PLACED with "strong & sturdy" JACK STANDS
suggesting that the FLOOR JACK remain in place as an added precaution.
WHY?? IS THEIR A CHANCE FOR SLIPPAGE?

This is common practice. Nothing is 100% bulletproof and leaving the jack up near you gives you better odds of nothing going wrong. It is possible if your are wrenching hard enough to wiggle jackstands especially if the are not on a smooth hard(Read concrete) surface.
