It's been a while, but I believe they are 3/16" diameter x 1/4" long aluminum. They were definately not 1/8" diameter.
You can use the 1/8" daimeter rivets... but you'll need rivet washers for the head. Which is overly complicated, so just use 3/16" diameter rivets (they must be 1/4" long, or else they wont grab right).
Yeah, the screw deal sounds like a much better plan. Can you tell me exactly how long the screw needs to be so I don't drive it into the door? Will it be 1/4 in. like above poster's rivet? I have tons of small screws here in the garage. Did you use a small washer also? Thanks
I'd have to take the door apart to measure the screw now! I did not use a washer. I keep bags of different sized screws and bolts. Nails to. Hmm, you could use a screw driver or something else thin to measure how much room you have before screwing into the door. From memory there is around a half inch but check to be certain!
I replaced my door seals yesterday. Drivers side took 30 minutes, passenger side 10 minutes, because I really took my time on first side so I wouldn't screw anything up.
I DID NOT remove the door panel. I did pull up on the top of the panel & slide it out of track to have more room to work.
I used a chisel & hammer to remove the 3 rivets. Then I used a long, slim, straight edge screwdriver to help the tabs out.
After I had the new seals in place, I used 12mm x 1/2 in. sheet metal screws. Worked great.
Cyclebuyer, I worship you! I can't believe it just took you 30 min. for this job. I just finished my passenger side door-inside and outside strips. My inside strips had been stapled in and since the plastic frame it was stapled to was cracked and brittle it was a bitch getting them out. Then I had to manufacture a piece of metal to hold a couple of the plastic frame pieces together so I would have a whole frame to screw the new stripping to. It basically took me all day since I was stopping and starting for various familial things. I'll probably do the other side tomorrow. I'm hoping there will be less problems with it. I'm also surprised you could do this without removing the door. Anyway, thanks for the tips.
I just did mine yesterday and finally took the hammer approach to getting the new clips to seat in the slots. I had bought a complete weather strip kit off ebay for $400 (11 pieces) and I wish I had read the posts about non-oem kits. I started on the drivers door and replaced the weatherstripping and the first thing I noticed is that the new stuff is not reinforced like the original. Now I am worried is will fall off. Time will tell. I did the passenger side window strip but left the original foam weatherstrip on because it was not in that bad a shape. By the way it took all day unlike our hero cybercycler.
So removing the inside door panel is a must? How many screws are in the door panel and are there any tricks to getting it out? I ordered both sides, inner and outer seals from Corvette Central....not sure of the quality of them yet as I have not received them yet.
redoing my 84 got the outer seals from corvette america...what am I suppose to do with the clips... old ones had rivets and snaps.....clips won't fit in the snap...or will the rivets hold everthjng together

Not sure but a picture would be helpful. You will have to drill out the old rivets being extremely careful not to drill through your door. Put a piece of tape or a piece of rubber hose on the drill bit, as a stopper, so you don't drill through your door.
I just replaced mine but IIRC mine had clips and rivets. One piece of advice is you can either reinstall with rivets (3/16 I think) or use screws to install it in the rivet location. Either way is fine and may just benefit someone in the future by not having to drill them out. I used screws on one side and rivets in the other just to see which way is better. Both are satisfactory.
But anyway, pictures of what you're talking about would be helpful.
I love 5 year old threads. Am I in trouble for responding to a 5 year old thread?
