[This is a repost from the off topic forum, which I realized after posting is mostly ****-related locker room jokes.]

I just watched Con Air, the movie with Nick Cage and John Cusack. And I realized they destroyed at least 2 beautiful vettes to make that flick. Looked like a light blue c2 vert and a nice white early C4. Both got totally trashed.

Just curious if anyone knows what generally happens to vettes or other exotics when they get smashed in movies? I can imagine smashed up crown vics and other sedans go straight to the junk yard, but a vette or a ferrari should be worth restoring, right?

And how do they get the cars in the first place?
Any CF members ever rented their car out for movies? Are there companies that specialize in that?

I read somewhere that there are companies that rent out all sorts of vehicles to the studios. They`l rent you 30 Crown Vicks for that police chase, where 15 of them get wrecked etc. In tv shows like The Dukes of Hazard, they had somewhere around 35-40 "General Lees". some of them did not even have engines in them

i also recall reading or hearing that was not a complete c2. it was just a shell plus not original.

also, if you recall the ferarri in ferris bueller, that was not a real ferarri either, just a kit car. the close ups were of a real ferarri, but the damage scenes were not.

... also, and yes, they do call people for cars. they were filming parts of hoffa here, and a local camera lighting friend of mine asked my dad if they could use his 40 chevy to park in the background.

I thought Con-Air sucked... and anyone knows that they don't trash classics - they will always find a shell or something in the junk yard to thrash... close-ups are always of real show cars. There are a few CF members who have had cars in commercials and movies. Some dude in Hawaii has a C3 and has had his car used a couple of times.

I once saw one of the Ferraris used in the old TV show "Miami Vice" for sale at an auction. It was based on a C4 Corvette, guages, dashboard, steering wheel, seats,...everything. Just the skin looked like a Ferrari.

I remember when I was a teenager, they blew up the Ferrari in a Magnum PI Episode. I was watching and said, "That was a Fiat X19". The Ferrari in Miami Vice was a Corvette chassis kit car, and when the went to the Testarossa, all the high speed scenes were a kit car. Well, those are some '80's TV examples anyway.

Isn't "trashed" and "C4" like an oxymoron or something?

Hate to see a good C2 wasted, though...

Any CF members ever rented their car out for movies? Are there companies that specialize in that?

A totaled Vette or Ferrari is a totaled car. It's junked, just like if you or I had wrecked it. If it's not "totaled", then it is repaired.

My oldest son works in the TV/movie/commercial business as a stunt man, primarily driving cars/trucks/motorcycles. Remember the Superbowl Bud commercial where Earnhardt Jr. drives a C3 to return his girl's lipstick? That was my son driving the C3s (there were actually two of them, one was crashed in the making of the commercial ).
One of them was a rental, one was borrowed.

There are companys who maintain rental cars just for the studios. If a studio needs a special car that the rental companys don't have, they either buy the car on the open market or borrow them from a private owner, depending on the end result in the script. (the wouldn't borrow a car and then crash it).
My son also modifies cars used in crash scenes, putting propane cannons in them to flip 'em, cages, racing seats and belts, auxilary brakes for spins, etc. It's a facinating business.

An oxymoron is a phrase that contradicts itself.
Are you really meaning redundant?

The real one was on display at Petersen Automotive museum about 6 mos. ago. It definitely looked its age.
