Default Check engine light

My instrument cluster and my information center are not working.

My check enging light comes on when starting the car and goes out right away as it should. After about 15-20 minutes of driving it comes on again. I have disconnected the battery but that doesn't seem to reset it as I thought it might.

Any suggestions? Could this be a malfunction in the system, a bad sensor, etc?

If the light stays lite theres probably a sensor malfunction.
Take it to a shop and they can pinpoint the problem. Could be an 02 sensor. Does the mileage suffer?

Default Milage

It does seem as though I am not getting very good milage. That's another problem. My odometer isn't working either.

Will it hurt to drive it for a while before I can take it in?

It seems like my milage is suffering. Hard to tell though, my odometer isn't working.

Will it hurt to drive the car wa while before I take it in? By the way, it passed California smog test. Does that make a difference?

i get the check engine light sometimes still,
i replaced my coolant temp sensor but the plastic connector was missing the tab that holds it on. if i really get on the gas or hit a bump it will sometimes disconnect long enough to give me the check engine light. clears up when i turn the car off.

I understand how to pull the codes, but haven't done it yet. I believe I have to short out the two end contacts, turn on the key and watch for the blinks. Is that correct?

I suggest going to Autozone. I went there and they gave me a 2 pronged metal key to short the contacts out, and also a booklet that explains the codes. I was having a similar problem, my light would come on after about 15 minutes of driving at high speeds. the code indicated O2 sensor. however this was almost a year ago and I have not changed it and have seen no ill effects.

Is the light still coming on? As I mentioned, the car recently passed smog. If the O2 sensor were bad would it still have passed?

The light did quit coming on. Weird huh?
I am not sure how the O2 sensor affects the emissions. However mine passed...
