Had that very same problem, not a week ago! I fixed it by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes to reset the computer. When you reconnect the battery, All the lights on the Climate Control Panel should start blinking for about 30 seconds or so, and it should clear up after that. Mine is back to working like a champ!

If it's got power and ground, it should light up. Power is from the a/c clutch fuse; ground runs to the driver's side kick panel area. I'd check the ground first. Otherwise, assuming the fuse is good, you're going to have to pull it out of the dash to make sure it's getting power (though I highly doubt the wire is open - have you done anything behind the dash?). Disconnecting the negative battery cable shouldn't matter.

When mine acts up I double up my fist and hit the drivers side tranny cover real hard. Every thing starts working then.

The a/c clutch relay is grounded by the ECM when it gets an "On" signal from the Programmer which gets it's "On" signal from the Dash Controls. The clutch coil is either shorted to ground somewhere or the Dash Panel is stuck in the "On" mode and it would be hard to tell what temperature it's set at if it's completely blank. I think it's probably the latter - you need a new Panel, but if you take to a Dealer, they can hook it up a Tech 2 and diagnose it in about 2 minutes. Unfortunately, even rebuilt panels aren't cheap - for pricing, try The Last Detail -

My buttons would not work on my 95. The temp readout was fine though. I had to take out the A/C control box, take it apart and clean the terminals off of the circuit board. I'm not sure if you have the same problem I had, but I thought I would post just in case. Perfusion wrote up directions on how to take it out, step by step, and clean it. Let me know if you want a link to it.
