If anything, there are 2 parts to our generation. 1st part 1984-1990 and 2nd part 1991-1996, being front and back fascia changes along with interior changes. But with the changes, they are still 1 generation "C4".
And, yes, to non-Corvette folks, all Corvettes probably do look alike, especially the post-C3 "generations".

I have had quite a few people ask me if mine is the new Corvette. Mine's a 1993, so that makes me feel good. So I explain to them that it is a 1993. They all respond with, "I can't tell them apart". Yes, they are definitly NOT Corvette people, but they still love the Corvette.

I would say three, the early(84-90) the later(91-96) and the wide body(ZR1) most non car people would never differentiate between a ZR1 and a normal coupe.
I guess there is the L98 subclass (prior to 1992), the LT1 subclass, the LT4 subclass and the LT5 (ZR1) sub ,er.., superclass within the C4 generation.
Chevrolet always updates something every year to make a model desirable, they've always made something nice a standard option or given more options as a generation progresses.
Now, the '53 vs the '62, those were two totally different cars. You could split those up into two generations.
...well most of those folks who do recognize a Corvette or have seen a few most likely only identify back to the late 60's models forward, if you look at the vette for general design and shape they are all about the same: two seater shifter towards the rear axle hence a long sloping hood, side gills, raised bloated from fenders, pointed nose with no specific radiator grill, twin sets of tail lights, no detectable bumper, flip forward hood, flip up headlights, wipers that approach each other and flat out fast.
Considering some of those attributes and I'm sure there are many more I just didn't think of but they all do look the same
In the old days, you could visually identfy every corvette that drove down the street by year. They all had something distinctly different. You could do this until sometime in the late C3 era. With the C4s and newer, sometimes the yearly changes are only applied to the inside or to the mechanics, so now you really can't glance at a newer vette and say for sure it's such and such a year. To me, the C5 and C6 are so visually simular they could really be the same generation.
Driving down the road, I distinguish early C4s from late models because of body differences. I comment to my kids and they can't see it. To love a vette is to know it.

...and to "subclass" it even more, 4+3 cars, then zf6 spd cars
I call em C4As(L98) and C4Bs(LT1)because of the bodystyles(91 and 84 aside in the engine department)) but really there are pretty substantial changes about every two years
