Default Ideling problems! please advice

My 87 has some trouble idling now and then.
When I fire it up it sometimes dies right away, if I dont get on the gas pedal. I then have to sit and keep the rpms at like 1200 to keep it alive. Then after one or two minutes it will usaully idel fine at about 600 rpm.
When I get on the gas and wait for hear to idle there is a smell of gas from the exhaust.

What is my problem here?

Have you checked your fuel pressure?
Have you replaced anything?

I think the IAC is a major factor in cold idle... you could clean and reset that...

I had this EXACT problem. 88 l98. I tried replacing fuel pump, filter, MAF, and a bunch of other parts. Nothing helped. Brought it to an expert who quickly figured out it was an idle control adjustment way out of whack.

Yes. I meant IAC. On second reading of your post, I noticed the difference between our problems is that mine had a perfect cold start, and would have idle trouble after reaching normal running temp. (weird, huh?) If yours is idling badly at cold temps, could be same problem, but perhaps not...The IAC should help no matter what. DON'T let anyone tell you to replace the MAF or anything else expensive until you've taken it to a shop and had them do a workup on their fancy computers. The place I took mine was able to tell immediately just what was wrong with the fuel/air mixture and when.

I had the same problem with my 86 coupe and after throwing lots of parts at it (O2 sensor, plugs wires etc) it was 3 injectors that were bad
replaced all 8 found online Accel for $200.00
I would still check fuel pressure etc ( the stuff you can test cheap)
Good luck

Help is on the way. I just mailed the C4 Maintenance manual by Chris Petris to you today. Your problem is covered in the fuel injection. PCV and ECM sections plus others. You may have multiple causes for the problem. Hope this helps!

For some reason, when its rainy outside, my car does the exact same thing. I don't worry about it and just give it a little extra gas on start up. On sunny days, it starts right up, as always! Thanks to my new injectors and tuning!

I dont think thats weird at all, because I have the same problem with my '94, once it warms up, it idles rough. Does anyone have any detailed directions on how to do the IAC cleanup procedure? Im not really familiar with alot of stuff on my car yet, especially under the hood . Any help would be much appreciated, I just wanna make sure I do things right, and not make things worse.

Oh man, on your last post, you said your MAF might be kaput. Code 33 means there's something going on with the MAF. Did you replace it yet? I wouldn't get Bosch if I were you. Get the non-wire type from Microtech. Its half the price and probably more reliable because there is no wire on it. Let us know what you think of it. Oh and BTW, did you change those MAF relays yet??? Good luck man, I had the problem about 2 months ago and now my Vette is fine, EVEN with a Superram Intake manifold.

Default hard start, idle

My 87 starts hard. cranks for 10 to 20 seconds before it starts and after it starts the rpm's go up and down (hunting) from 600 to 1400.
Seems stuck at around 1200 rpms after it warms up. I have to "kick" it down when I come to a stop, it then idles and starts hunting. I have a manual trans. Had it a week, I love it but....
Any help would be appreciated!
