Default Running too cool.....really

1990 L98.

Anyway, I took the plastic bag out of my radiator that was causing me to over heat. I decided to put the AC on high and let the car idle to see if it got hot.

Well, there's two cans on the radiator. A large one on the drivers side that seems to always run. And a second smaller fan that I guess goes on and off.

Well, the second fan never came on. So, there are two questions:

1. Should this second litte fan come on right away with the AC
2. Does the second fan come on at a certain tem? 180*. Perhaps the car never got hot enough for it to come on? The needle on the guage was always under 1/2 way, which is pretty cool.

NOW, do I need to start looking for a problem with the second fan? OR am I just looknig for trouble?

If your looking for any fans to come on at 180* you're not running stock equipment.

In my 1985-
195* Tstat (stock)
Main fan comes on at about 225*
Aux fan comes on at about 238*

(Those are estimates off the top of my head, my L98 has never gotten hot enough for either one to come on).

Just looking for trouble.

Actually, I read on the forum that with the a/c turned on the master fan comes on, regardless of temp. The aux fan does come on a set temp, mostl likely more than 180. Wiser (and cooler) heads will definitely post on what that temp is. I doubt if the car's running too cold. You just may not have gotten it up to the temp where the second fan turns on. That's good news, for now.

That's what I'm hoping.

I can't remember the year it changed - but - the secondary fan on my '88 is controlled only by the temp sensor in the driver side head. There is no line back to the computer or A/C . The car has to be over 235 or so before it comes on.

Mystery solved. It is temp related. I had to drive it for quite a while before the second fan kicked on. All's well.

Your second fan is controlled by a relay switch on your high pressure line, and it's only purpose is to cool the A/C Compressor when the head pressure starts building.

Temp guage sits at 2:00 is that about right with everyone? The guage isn't that specific. It says 100 at one end and 260 at the other.

I can't remember but does your year have a digital readout as well as the little gauge to the right?

Yes, first year of the new interior. It has the digital speedo and analog guages to the right.

Oil temp just over 100*, about 1:00. Water temp about 2:00, sometimes a little over, 1/2 way to 3:00.

Analog guages are not accurate. They are a "guesstament" . The digital guage should be accurate. BTW......There is a 35 deg. difference between my analog and digital.
The primary fan should come on about 226-228 and the secondary about 236-238 deg.

Also, something to note, the digital guages are about 5º colder than acutal coolant temp (in the engine). That's because the sensor is in the front of the intake manifold. No worries though, just thought I would throw that out there.

That's why I can't find it. I don't have it.

Another mystery solved.

So on my analog guage is about 2:00 the right reading?

190-200 usually normal. My '91 guage was off by as much as 15+ deg. When I tested temp w/a infa red heat measurement tool. I tested the heat to the inlet on top of eng block, radiator cap, surge tank & I 4got where else. Replaced guage and now only off by 5+ degrees.
