I just pulled (tore, scrapped, hacked, etc) the old headliner out of my 96 CE. It was GLUED in good! What have you used to stick the whole unit back into the top?? I have new material and headliner glue to re-cover the insert. Thanks
Are you saying that 3M spray would also be used to re-install the unit back into the top? I know it is good to use to replace the fabric on to the unit.
I don't think there is a close enough fit to use any spray contact adhesive to re-install the headliner board. I would use silicone rubber, squirt some lines of it and let it sit until it firms, usually 24 hrs. Remove the top and let the headliner board sit in place overnight.
When I pulled mine out of my 84, it was held in with a few strips of velcro... Made it easy to get out, I'm sure it will be easy to put in, and it was quite clean...
Silicone was my first thought. It would be easier to remove if I had to go back in. Velcro would be nice, but I'm afraid the back of the piece that has the headliner on it is not in that good of shape. So I will probably go with silicone.
I used 3M black weatherstrip glue. Even with triple digit heat here and my top being black I have not had any problems with the insert falling down. I used regular 3M upholstery glue to glue the headliner to the insert.
I just replaced my headliner and it was a trial & error process.
I tried several spray adhesives, but none would hold the material
in this Texas heat. Each one, I'd enter my Ruby (interior 140 degrees)
and the cloth would hang in my face!
I finally bought the new headliner offered by Corvette America
and installed the opposite Velcro strips needed using Liquid Nails for
fiberglass and cloth. (Got it at Lowes)
I applied pool chalk to the Velcro half on the underside of the new headliner then placed the unit into the top shell. After some tapping
on the headliner, the chalk transferred to the top. This showed
me where to glue the Velcro.
