Check engine light came on on my 94 coupe. It will come on everynow and then but if i shut it off it wont be on when i start it up again. I havent scanned it because i dont have a scan tool and i cant remember what to do with the paper clip to get the code out of it. When i get the code from the computer do i have to clear it or will it just go away.
i think 94s and 95 have the 16pin obdII connector but the obdI computer. if im wrong and you have the 12 pin obdI plug you short the top 2 most right pins together and turn the car to the on position but don't start it. long flashes are the first digit and shorts are the second. to reset the codes just disconnect the battery for a few seconds.
I personally would not reccomend doing the paper clip trick...you never know what actually may be wrong with the car...go to wal mart and pick up a obd II reader for $125.00 and this way you will have it forever...besides if someone you know has an error code in their car you can help them out...even if they shoot you $20 bucks here or there...mine paid for itslef in a month....My opinion......

Will the OBD II reader work for a 92? I don't know zip about codes and I want to learn.
I am not too sure...You would have to look under the hood of the car and look for a blue gm sticker it will tell you if it is a obdI or II car....blue sticker under the hood or in rear console.
95 and older is definatly obdI but some where along (not sure if they changed it in 94 or just my 95) they put a obdII plug but the computer is still OBDI

How will an OBD II reader help him? His car is OBD I, it just uses the OBD II style connector.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with using the paperclip, It has been done for a couple decades now, never heard of a car blowing up, frying an ECM or having any ill effects.
Go to this site it will explain everything you need to know to pull codes.
Your 94, more than likely, has a 16 pin connector. The 95's had some OBDII parameters, but they were only used for test purposes prior to the Transition to OBDII.

EXCUSE ME FOR TRYING TO PUT A LITTLE INPUT FOR ADVICE!
I have the Actron 9150 which will work on an OBD I or II vehicle. My 95 has the OBDII 16 pin connector with the OBD I set of codes. Wasnt till 96 that GM implemented the full OBD II set of codes. I thought one could go to like an autozone and borrow a scanner to get codes read and diagnosed...try this too.
