Well it happened, I lost my keys. Great. Anyway I went to the dealership and gave them my vin number and of course they could't find the VATS code. Bought a new ignitions lock cylinder with two keys. Of course they dont have the chip, but I deprogrammed the VATS in my vette anyway. When I got everything back together, I connected the battery, waited about 15 min. and then went to start the vette and it would't start. I get all my guages and accessories, I can hear the fuel pump kick in but the starter doesnt make one sound. The only things I disconnected wire wise was were the wires from the key lock, and the air bag. Any clue or input would be great.
Just unchecking the flag box for VATS doesn't disable it. You still need something to energize the start enable relay.
Do a lil search on defeating VATS and you'll find a list of the 15 different ohm values used in VATS. Go to Radio Shack and get some resistors of those values (or VERY close to them) and temp. splice them, one at a time, between the wires that went to the "reader" contacts for the old VATS key (Remember you have to wait 10 minutes between trys). Once you find it you can either solider the resistor in or put the ignition switch back the way it was and have GM cut you a key with that value pellet in it.
Yes you need to program the PASS-Key. During the process don't allow more than 10 seconds to pass between each step. It is best to have two keys if you have them both. That way if you ever loose one, the other is ready to go.
Insert the first key into the ignition and turn it to the RUN position.
Turn the key to Lock and remove it. The program mode is now been entered.
The CCM will prompt you to insert a key into the ignition lock by flashing the SECURITY lamp. The lamp will flash the number of times for the corresponding key, i.e., once for the first key, twice for the second, etc. So insert the #1 key but DO NOT TURN IT ON!
Remove the key.
The SECURITY lamp will flash twice for the second key. Insert Key #2, again DO NOT TURN IT ON.
The system will finish the programming. Which is indicated by the SECURITY lamp going out.
If at any point when you insert a key and the CCM detects an invalid key, the SECURITY lamp will not flash and a DTC will be set.
Thanks for the replies and inputs. Well I went to Radio Shack and bought most of the resistors. I was just wondering if I have to have to airbag installed for the car to start. I had to take it out to install the new ignition cylinder and I was just wondering if leaving the airbag out would interfer with the ignition or computer.
