Default keys

I've had my 91 for about two months (man I love my car). Anyway it only had one key when I got it and my wife wants me to get her a key. Anyone know how much one will cost? Also is the Chevy dealership the only place to have one made due to the security system?

Probably the best place to get a key blank is on eBay. Usually under $10.00 compared to 3 or 4 times that at the dealer. You will have to know the vats # of your current key before placing the order. You can get that with a voltmeter or any reputable key maker can give you the info.

No, you don't have to go to the dealer. I had mine duplicated at a local Corvette specialty shop. They zapped me $31 for it, but you can probably do better. I'd think some well-stocked locksmiths would also be able to cut this key for you. The only thing that's unusual about the key is that the ignition key has a resistor pellet built into it. The key cutter will only need a blank with a pellet of the correct resistance value. Put a digital ohm meter across the contacts on either side of the pellet in your key to find out what resistance value you need.

Be well,

A locksmith can read your key and make you one. Cost is about $25.

I had extra keys made at a mall kiosk stand that just made keys. They charged me 22 bucks a piece.

91's Rule!

After you get your self another key, you might want to install a keyless entry system, and save the wear and tear on your cylinders. Keyless entry's are pretty , and they're not that expensive. LOL.

Had my spare made at a local locksmith for $22.00. That included the cheap door key. Don't want to steal this thread, but I'd like to have keyless entry in my 91. Can you give me some specifics, what you bought, how was the installation etc?

A set of keys for my 92 cost me $34.00 at the locksmith. Of course, living in California is always higher for almost anything.

A good locksmith will actually have the key blanks that you need, don't expect it to be cheap. I think they charge like $25 for it at one place. I had mine duplicated at the dealership shortly after I bought it and it was around $20 I think, can't remember for sure.

If you bypass the VATs you can actually get a key made without the chip in it, but not any shop is going to have that blank as it is longer than your typical blank without the key.

I remember I went to the local lockmsith, they are very good, and asked the lady if she could cut me a key like mine without the chip in it. She said sure but it wouldn't start the car. I told her that would be fine. She said it would cost $2 but it wouldn't start the car. I said it would be fine, please cut it. She cut it for me and then asked me if I would like to see if it would start the car before I paid for it? Huh? you said three times that it wouldn't start the car and I told you anyway to do it. If it doesn't work its not her fault. I told her that I was sure it would work fine.

Since then I've bypassed the vats entirely and now I can get $2 keys instead of $20 keys

For most of us with the passibe/keyless entry, it came with the car, as a standard feature.
I have it, I disabled it because it was a major pain, and sure wouldn't spend money on having it installed in a car that doesn't already have it.

No problems with the function. Every time I walked into the garage with the key in my pocket, the stupid thing would do exactly what it was supposed to. Then, when I'd leave, it would perform again. Honk, honk, honk, honk, ho...
It is just easier for me to put the key in the lock and turn.

I think I paid around $32 for a new ignition key for my '88; I always carry two sets to avoid the embarassment of locking the keys in the car.
