93 Vette, I just had a light start to come on in the instrument cluster that reads, "ONE TO FOUR". Does anyone know what this means? I have only had the vette for 6 wks.
Thanks
Ken
ahh the infamous light. It means you need to shift from first to fourth. The most annoying thing chevy ever did in my opinion. I believe its supposed to help fuel effciency, but i find it to be a pain in the rear
That's the "skip-shift" light. It basically forces you to shift from first to fourth gear under certain conditions. If you're still able to shift into second gear when the light comes on then the previous owner may have disconnected the solenoid in the trans. This is a popular mod as the 1-4 shift is very annoying.
From: The reason time exists is so everything doesn't happen at once
The 6 spped transmission cars had an electronic gizmo that prevented you from shifting into 2nd or 3rd gear under certain light acceleration conditions (your owners manual, pg 72, will explain). There are two ways to overcome this 2-3 "lockout": Install an elimiator (very easy to install) or nail it in 1st. I prefer the latter.
Thanks guys, this is an awesome forum. I stopped at the Chevy dealer tonight and thier response was they would have to look at it!! I will never go to another dealer again especially since one "check it out" before I bought it from Houston. Other than the vehicle had been chipped, won't pass emissions, broken antena, radio didn't work, no speakers in the car, cruise control didn't work, cheap loud aftermarket exhausts, had to do a total rebuild on AC already, shocks are shot, fan belt was shot, needs alignment. All this thanks to the morons at Courtesy Chevrolet in Houston!!!
Just as an aside, there was a similiar issue on LT1 Camaros with 2.73s and automatics. There was no "1" on the selector, just 2,D,OD. It seems that the EPA noise pollution tests were done at a certain speed, and had to be done with the car in any selectable gear. With 2.73s, the car could actually be screaming near redline at the prescribed speed, so they just made "1" non-selectable by not including a "1" on the selector, and putting this little plastic thingy in the selector block the selector from this position. It's actually a quick way to tell if you're looking at a 2.73 F-body.
Not sure how they got around that with the 2.56 Corvettes, though.

....or, more accurately, the "one to four" light indicates that the car's computer has determined that it should energize a solenoid within the transmission which will block second and third gears, thereby forcing a shift from first directly into fourth gear.
If you can still go into second/third when this light is on, it means someone has disconnected/disabled that solenoid, either by installing a commercially-available kit or pulled the fuse to that solenoid. Even if this has been done, the computer still calls for the light to come on....to remind you that you are driving like your aunt.
Having just learned of this I am soo ready to dis able it. Does any one have a link. I would like to make this mod number 1.
Some years you can just unplug it, others you HAVE to have the adapter. The only way to get rid of the light is to program it out. Not sure if that's possible on a '93 though.
