I have a 1990 coupe and was wondering how you tell what engine type you have?
OK, there are a couple of differnt ways, one is the codes listed under center consol lid (RPOcodes are listed at the top before threads) or a quick visual would be for you to look at the thread of "show your engine compartment" and compare. If your car is a std. vette it should be an L98, if it is a ZR-1 it would be an LT5 this is provided no one did some sort of swap.
The easy way is to look at the VIN. The 5th digit in the VIN determines the car model: Y is the standard Corvette, a Z is the ZR-1. The 8th digit is the engine code: An 8 is the L98, a J is the LT5.
The L98 motor was the "standard" motor in coupes and convertibles. The LT5 motor is unique to the ZR-1 model. All ZR-1 bodies will be 3" wider at the rear (look for a 1.5" black spacer on either side of the rear license plate and a "power key" on the console under the A/C controls).
All ZR-1's were 6-speeds. L98 motors got either an auto or 6-speed. The 90 ZR-1 got a rounded rear fascia like the 91 and later cars.
The 1990 L98 had two horsepower ratings based on the body style. The coupe was rated at 250HP and the vert was 245HP. This was due to slightly different mufflers on the 'vert. The engines were identical.
