Default O2 sensor question

I went to the local Chevy parts store to get a new O2 sensor. They said my 87 has 3 of them
And they aren't cheap either.

If this is true , where are the 3 of them located?

Everything I read says to replace the O2 sensor (singular) and doesnot refer to there being 3 of them, which makes me all the more confused than I normally am.

Thanks for the help!

Do NOT return to that parts guy; your '87 has one O2 sensor in a bung in the left side of the front Y pipe.

You can get a replacement unit at Auto Zone.

You only have one, like all L98s.

fyi, I was standing there looking at the fiche at the same time as the parts person, it definatley showed the car using one of one number and 2 of another number. I will go back and have them print the screen, scan it and post it so all can see that GM thinks they put 3 sensors on the 87 L98!

No, he should go back and ask exactly where all three are located

The print out says where they are located, the mystery 2 are in the Y-pipe area of the exhaust manifold. Which we know is not true.
What I wonder is why you guys think that every parts man that can read the parts book correctly should also know every detail about every car?
They aren't a mechanic who actually works on the car.(and we know the mechanics in general dont know much)
The parts person is trained to use the fiche and get the correct part based on what GM has on the fiche.
IF the parts man has had any dealing with a certain part that is incorrect, they usually remember it and know in the future. But again there is know way they can know every detail on every car. especially if they are a full line GM parts warehouse.

My parts man is not a man, she is my sister-in-law who gets me very good pricing on gm parts. She has been doing GM parts for 14 yrs and is very competant. She had never had a call for the O2 sensor for an 87 before I asked for one, and she went exactely by the fiche. Upon returning to her, we again looked it up, she printed out the above page for me, and dam as she tried the fiche(actually a pc) would not link to a location detail for the mystery sensors. It just shows the one located on the left side.
Cant blame this on anyone other than the General himself.

I second that emotion. My 92 LT1 has two 02 sensors. I physically verified this last weekend during an underbody inspection.
