Default Brake Bleeding

There is a local shop advertising $60.00 for a brake flush and re-fill - Stopped by and talked to the manager and he said that they use the gravity method and it takes about one hour - I specifically asked him about the brake fluid in the ABS System and he said that ALL brake fluid would be drained using the gravity method

Should I believe this guy that the gravity method drains ALL of the old brake fluid?

Vital Stats: 89 vette, AT, brake fluid at least four years old, ABS

Thanks

Chris

The fluid in the ABS will not drain by gravity nor will it flush out with a conventional method like open the bleeder, push down on the pedal, close the bleader and release the pedal.

You need a Tech-1 (or similar scanner) with a brake module to bleed the ABS. The Tech-1 scanner sends a signal to the ABS to run so that brake fluid can move thru it.

Buy a set of Speed Bleeders and do it yourself in about 15 minutes at home. They simply replace the regular bleed screws in each caliper. To bleed fluid after that, simply loosen the bleeder about 1/4-1/2 turn, attach a tube to the bleeder and push down on the brake pedal. The Speed Bleeders have a check ball behind a spring that keeps air from entering the system as the pedal is released. Go to https://www.speedbleeder.com/ The Vette bleeder is part # SB1010.

If the brakes have never been bled it might be worth the $$ in case he snaps a bleeder.

If he snaps a bleeder, chances are he'll give it back to you that way. 99 out of a 100 customers will never know to look.

If you were in the buisness of doing brake flushes, why wouldn't you use a mighty-vac? Is there some advantage to gravity over a vacuum?

At the car plant we draw a vacuum in the system before any fluid is put in. It must hold that vacuum with no loss for ~1 min before filling. The fluid is then installed into the vacuum and viola it is good to go.No external bleeding is done unless there is a leak when the fluid is injected.Remember a Vacuum can seal 2 loose parts togther that fluid pressure will blow open.Over all the system is quite reliable good for us car drivers.
