Well, yesterday I went to look at a 1996 Vette. It has a 6 speed and lt4. It has 84,000 miles. There were misc. scratches and chips here and there, not too bad. The left seat is torn. It needs a new throwout bearing (makes a growling noise when you let off the clutch). Targa top looks like it needed to be painted or something. Also looked like it needed new weatherstripping in areas. Oh and one more thing the e-brake sticks when its pulled up (any solutions to that problem?) They were asking 11k, I talked him to 10k and left a deposit. What do you guys think? Thanks

Car sounds like a 6 out if 10. 10k sound's like a fair price. If you do your own work even better. Is this the car that is listed in the for sale section of this forum if so someone did a car fax on it and it came up as a salvaged title. That would make a difference
You say the E-brake sticks when you pull it up? Well, the E-brake should engage when you pull up on the handle. You can just push back down on the handle so you can get out of the car.
If you want to release the E-brake you pull back up on the handle and push and hold the button on the end of the handle and lower the handle while still holding the button.
Is it doing something other than what I described?

Lol, sorry I should have described it better. When you try to disengage the e-brake it is very hard to get it to go down.
Also, is there any way to make sure that the growling noise is a throwout bearing? It makes the growling noise when it's sitting there and when you start off when the clutch is let out. I'm just wondering if maybe this is a common problem on vettes or if it could be potentially something worse?
10k is a lot of money. However, if your happy with the numbers go for it. Personally, I would shop around and consider other cars that have less mileage and less wear and tear, but that's the way I do business. I would prefer to spend a couple of dollars more, and pick up something with a tad less mileage, and as little problems as possible to deal with once I purchase the car. Guessing at what the cause of a noise in a car is not what I call a selling point. My .02.
Hey Rev...If I understand it correctly, the throw-out bearing noise(when it's going south) is heard when you have the clutch pedal on the floor. If the noise is heard with no pressure on the clutch pedal, then it is most likely the input shaft of the transmission. Most of the 6-speeds do the latter, from a faint whine to a pretty good growl like my car does. Most say it is not a problem, but it's disturbing none-the-less. Good luck!

A release bearing would not be prone to changes in acceleration/deceleration. Sounds about right for the money, enjoy!

I was getting a growling noise from the Muncie 4 speed in my 69 when the clutch was let out (most noticable in neutral). It was the input shaft bearing and eventually the trans had to be rebuilt as every gear was missing teeth. I suggest you have someone with a good knowledge of ZF's check it out as they are a lot more expensive the the M20.

Well, the transmission seems to shift perfectly fine and the clutch doesn't slip at all.
Thanks for all the replies guys. I'm still deciding on it, now that transmission thing has got me worried.
