I am really getting sick of flat tires. Just had my third one this year on the Vette. Two have been nails and one was a bad valve stem. I caught the other two while the car was still in the garage, but this time I picked up a nail on an on ramp and the tire was overheated, actually melted on the inside, within a few hundred yards. I really get tired of all of the builders leaving nails all over the place.
No, I'm the sympathetic one. I see rocks, nails, boards, bricks, ladders, you name it, dirt, sand, gravel, bollards. It is absolutely insane. I wish these guys (mostly guys driving all these big and little trucks) had to sleep on the crap they drop. I watch streets pretty carefully. When I see construction begin, I know it's time to keep the Corvette off of it. Other cars have less pricey tires. $300 tires getting nails and eventually having to be replaced too soon is absolutely no fun!
Why don't you check with your local car dealer? They should have a road hazard policy available. Typically, these will cover road hazards on the wheels and tires for 5 years., You're tires just have to have a minimum of 5/32 of tread left. We've been selling quite a few down here just because of the hurricane debris on the roads. The cost is usually around $550.00 to $700.00 depending on the dealer.
This may sound weird, but I haven't had a flat since 1984. I've gotten nails and screws in my tire, but I either leave them in, or pull them out with no harm. I think that I've just jinxed myself.
I buy my tires at Discount Tire, and I purchase the extra road hazard protection. On my last round of tires on my car, I believe the protection cost me $17/tire. When I get a flat, I get a newbie...no questions.

I love Discount.
Actually you don't even have to purchase the warranty.
The same thing happened to me a few weeks ago... I noticed the car was pulling to the right pretty good on the freeway. I pulled off and checked the tires and the right front was flat because of a nail. These were Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3s with only about 3,000 miles. I was really bummed.
So I took it to Discount, and of course the tire was destroyed inside. I'll say one thing for the GS-D3, it's one heck of a tough tire because I drove it flat for about 10 miles at 70 MPH and there was NO visible damage on the outside. Discount replaced the tire for free, and I did not buy the warranty when I bought the tires! They come standard with a PRORATED road hazzard warranty, so the extra warranty they sell is for only for free replacement without the prorating. I actually bought the warranty anyway, just because it was cheap and so I know they won't give me any problems next time.

I've been lucky too. My last flat was on one of my dad's trucks over 16 years ago. I've never had a tire problem (except bad alignment wear that I should have caught once) on any of my own since, so I skip the road hazard plans when I get new tires. I figure I've saved enough over the years to pay for a tire or three, and if my luck changes, I'll reconsider.
