Default Avon tires

On tire rack.com the Avon tires are very highly rated, but I never hear of anyone using them on the C4. Is there any special reason for this? They don't have the cool look as like some of the tires with the big rain grooves, but they fair really very well in the ratings, both high performance and all weather tires. Plus the price is right!
Another question, would it be a big problem to run a 275-17s on the rear of a late model C4 that came with 285-17s. I understand the springs and suspension are tuned to a specific size tire, but for normal spirited daily driving (not racing or autoX) would that really make that big of a difference?
Any input will be appreciated

I have never used an Avon tire on a car, but if quality is the same as the ones made for motorcycles then they must be very impressive.
I have used them on Bikes and handling could not be better, specially when hot.

Using an undersize tire is not that much of a problem, some models used 275 / 40 -17 in all four corners and they were allright, then to improve handling and traction they went for 255 front and 285 rear.
The only thing to consider is that the wheel rim will be a little more exposed and unprotected if you happen to park very close to the sidewalk.

Other than that I would not see a problem.
But still, you have to check if all four wheels are the same size.
