Default Am I screwed?

My damn 87 TPI failed the hell out of its emissions test, its classified as a GROSS POLLUTER (stupid clean air laws)

My HC (PPM) = 566 @ 25MPH MAX=95
= 402 @ 15MPH MAX=70

CO (%) = 10.72@ 25 MPH MAX=0.65
= 9.04@ 15 MPH MAX=0.52

ANY SUGGESTIONS??

If my car is running too rich would that kill the Cats. that were already in there. Or do they just go bad after a while?

They just go bad after a while. 18 years is a long time for those things to last.

The cats filter out all kinda of things, so I would imagine so. I might be wrong though. I would have them checked before you go get new ones.

What state are you in? If you are in California and this is your regular bi-annual smog check at a test only site. California has a Consumer Assistance Program from the Bureau of Automotive Repair that will pay for up to $500 in repairs to make your car pass smog. There are two ways to qualify, one is income (very few vette owners will likely qualify), the other is if you are required to have a smog check at a test only station and you fail, no imcome requirements. If you qualify based on income, you'll have to pay for the first $20 in repairs, if not, you have to pay for the first $100 in repairs.

Good Luck!

Was this your bi-annual smog check (every other year)? If so, did your registration renewal say you needed to take it to a test only station?

An engine running too rich will burn out a cat pre-maturely. BUt your emissions are WAY over, so I would remove them and take a look at them. Is your exhaust system entirely stock?

How many miles on the Vette? Cats could be gutted, FPR bad, injectors bad... Do you have a Helms service manual?

My 87 has 3 cats , 2 pre-cats , just after the manifolds , and 1 main cat after it goes to single exhaust . I had to change all 3 to pass last time !

it's all just so silly anyway. the gov't could care less about air pollution. just a way to make $25-$40 bucks on us and slapping a sticker on it.

i know the tree hugger will disagree, but, i mean, we'll be out of oil anyway in 50-60 yrs.

i believe it could be your cat converters... bummer, don't think that's cheap.
