I guess the cheapest route for anything is UPS ground, unless you have some kind of company discount plan.
Use plenty of packing for protection, don't count on the handlers to be gentle.
I shipped wheels about a month ago, 1K miles, and used UPS. Even with added insurance per wheel, it was very reasonable. Do pack them well with good cardboard boxes and packing material inside such as styro peanuts and/or additional cardboard.
I called some local tire/rim shops and asked for boxes. Boxed up my rims and shipped them through FedEx ground. Sorry can't recall the price, but it was less than $20.00 a rim going from CA-FL.
just shipped two wheels and tires (85 wheels - 16" rim + 255/50/16 tires mounted on) via USPS Priority mail, for about $28/wheel.
I've shipped alot of stuff via sales on ebay- my personal experience is that Priority mail is the cheapest and fastest. But you don't get tracking numbers and such. Anyway- that's just my experience.

I completely agree with the USPS method. UPS was too expensive for some of the items I was selling so I recently swapped over to USPS
If you're into guaranteed tracking numbers and such, here's a little info:
(By the way, I work in the shipping business).
UPS Air/Ground goes UPS the ENTIRE route, no matter what/where it goes.
FedEX Ground uses contracted drivers. Each FedEX Ground driver/truck you see is individually owned/operated (think of it as a mini-franchise sort of deal).
UPS obviously has more of a corporate backing in terms of ground services than FedEX does. Yes FedEX Ground rates are typically cheaper than UPS Ground, but it all boils down to whether or not you want UPS handling your package the entire way, or FedEX contractors handling your package.
Either way though, good luck and be sure to package the wheels with a good 2" or more of packing material all the way around!

I sent 4 wheels from a 91 to Australia last year. The local pack and ship store checked prices and went with FedX as the cheapest. They put them in some very sturdy boxes (2 to a box) with heavy cardboard in between them.
I shipped from Michigan to a California warehouse and it cost around $100 total. They buyer paid to have them put on a container ship that his company uses.
They got there perfectly.
Edit: Thought someone might be interested in the before pic (just after stripping them):
and the after pic (buyer had them professionally polished) BLING!
