hi! i just replaced my battery in my 1990 coupe, and when i powered her back up there is a whirring noise coming from the front of the engine and the alternater is very hot to the touch after about 3 minutes of running.there is also a hot wire smell.the gauge is showing a slight discharge.i was not aware of the noise before i replaced the bat.what happened was, i cranked the car and the bat light came on,stopped the car,and the bat went dead.anyway, what can the noise be and the hot wire smell.i would also like to know how to take the tension off the surpentine belt with a bar, that's what the red book says to use-i want to take the alt off and take it to the generator shop to be check ed out and be rebuilt if bad. hope you guys can make sense out of what i wrote, and thanks---jp

Sound like the alternator took a dive, not sure of the noise you heard but, as to removal, a 1/2 drive breaker bar will fit barely, (might need to remove air filter "bellow tube") put in the center of the idler arm (square hole) if on the driv. side pull towards you, hold it remove belt off of pulley, and release slowly the idler arm, I leave the bar in and resting against well till I'm done w/reassembly.
The factory alternator is very weak. It the battery was not fully charged when installed, it killed the alternator. If it was fully charged, it is coincidence. What happened to you ,happens often.

I'd guess the alternator was the problem to begin with. Alternators often make noise when they're bad, depending on what's wrong with them. I always thought that having a light marked "bat" was stupid and confusing. It's really a charging light for the most part and this is how it was labeled years ago on most cars.
This is where I got my 140amp monster. Took a bit of modifications to fit, but it runs superbly. Don't forget to clean up all the battery contacts and grounds while you're at it. Clean up that multiple terminal area behind the battery too. Good luck !
