Default Rear carpet

I just bought my first 'Vette. '95 six speed coupe. The carpet which covers the rear bay is lose at the rear - the vertical upturn just under the rear window/hatch. How is this normally secured? Is it held in place under the trim or somehow glued down? I've tried sliping it under the trim but that lasts for about five minutes and it's lose again.

The only other issue with the car is that the arial doesn't retract all the way. Is this repairable or do you just replace the whole antenna unit? If the latter, is there a recommended place to find one that's maybe a little more reasonable than the local Chevy dealer?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

If you clean the antennae good and then rub it down with a light machine oil (3in1) or something similar you might have some luck. I used to have to coax mine down all the way until it did the above. After a couple of weeks I noticed it began retracting all the way. It has been working fine ever since. Good luck!

I had the same problem with the carpet in my 89. I have no idea what the "right way" of securing it was. My solution cost me $3.49. I went to Target and bought some velcro. I cut 4 1 inch strips and put 2 on each side of the latch. This was 4 weeks ago, and it has not come loose since.

This is what I was going to suggest.

I'd try velcro too. Actually there are several items fastened in a vette with velcro (radio inside the rear compartment is velcro'd to the wall).

Antenna is usually the geared ribbon cable that attaches the mast to the motor gets worn or breaks. Sometimes you can pull them out and its about a 19. replacement. If not or its the motor then it is a whole unit replacement roughly about 230.

For OEM parts contact Chris May at Superior Chevy, let him know your a member you'll get cost plus 15%. 1-800-728-8267

If you decide to replace it, the process is fairly easy. Jack the driver's rear up and remove the tire. Remove the dozen fasteners holding the wheelwell liner in, and you can then look back and see the antenna assy. The two connections are under the trim (coupe) just to the drivers side of the latch. Before you remove the antenna and pull the wires through the bulkhead be sure to attach a long string once it is through tie it on the new antenna wires and pull the string from inside to feed them through the bulkhead.

THere are four studs that the carpet simply fits over. Only problem, since there are no grommets in the carpet to fit over the tuds, they can pull out and once they pull out, it's harder to keep the carpet in place.

There are these flat nuts that press over the studs and snug up to the carpet, if you snug them down more, you may be able to hold the carpet in place.
The proper way to do it would be to sew in some grommets or sew the torn part of the carpet so the studs don't pull through.

As far as the antenna, I'm going the easy way by replacing the whole thing. You can get a new antenna at www.tld-corvette.com and replacing it will give you an opportunity to fix your carpet since the antenna wire runs along the back of the car under the foam that is between the hatch area and the back of the car. The trim will have to be removed to gain access.

Not that bad of a job, but for a first timer, it can be time consuming.

My carpet was the same way. I fixed it with an empty Equate Shampoo bottle from Wal-mart and some hog rings. The shampoo bottle that I had laying in the trash can was square so I cut the plastic and punched a hole in it to fit over the stud. I pulled the carpet into place and used the hog rings to fasten the carpet to the plastic. Problem fixed and it is only noticable if you take the trim off. I used the shampoo bottle plastic because it was flexible, so it made the bend from the stud to where the carpet goes verticle. I also fixed my floppy sun visors the same day with some vinyl siding. Just cut it and slipped it between the fabric and mirror.

When I owned the car, I was trying to figure out ways to do that. I was going to try Gorilla Glue, but that really didn't seem like the best option. Glad it worked, I didn't think of that!!!!

I tried using velcro, but it took me longer to install it before I noticed it was loose again. I guess the glue in the Velcro was not that good and the Vette got really hot aamaking the glue slip off.

I took some fishing line and with a needle put some stitches holding it in place and securing it against some screws and nuts.
It has stayed in place perfectly, and if I need to take it off I just have to cut the fishing line that is not visible. A very easy job to do.
