Good photos okies93, and aboatguy, I wouldn't let the whole ordeal scare me away, I've looked at these cars pretty seriously in the past so I know most of the possible issues. The reason I ask is that there is a nice looking '94 for a good price at a local dealer that has had the clutch replaced, but no records on the opti/wp - I just want to know exactly what I'll be in for if this was a repair I'd have to do within a month or two of ownership.
That being said, is this a job that most anyone can do given enough time?

Yes. The job takes some time the first time you did it for sure! But, as long as you have some mechanical ability it is not very hard at all. One of my C3 buddies and I did the opti and water pump on my 92. I even vented it myself. She's been running fine since! Knock on wood
I would say if you are going to have the car apart anyway...might want to look and see if the intake is leaking at all and take care of that at the same time. Plugs, coil, and wires too! That way you are all set!

If you have tools, the manuals, patience, and attention to detail, C4s are not that difficult trouble shoot and repair.
the hardest part is being hunched over doing wp/opti. my back ached for a few days after.
I found that it helped quite a bit to raise the front of the car (I got it up onto jackstands). Saved my back from aching anywhere near as badly as it would have otherwise.
