seen a couple of nice vettes with this option it kind of scares me, the money to replace shocks on this set-up...can I just skip it and put regular shocks????
Yes. Just don't cut the actuators off in case you ever want to go back to the better suspension. It's a desirable option if you go to resell. Cover the exposed ends of the actuators to protect them from damage.
I have a 91 Z-07 which has the really stiff springs of the original Z-51 in 84, latter Z-07's were softened up. I had a Service Ride Control light on forever and recently got the problem, properly diagnosed and fixed the FX-3 Selective Ride Control. It really works great now and I can't say enough how much better the Vette feels in the softest setting. The default setting was firm when it wasn't working and rode rougher than all get out. I autocrossed it last weekend with it dialed in for performance and that worked much better as well. FX-3 is really a nice to have when its working.
An added benefit I've found -- set to soft when the targa is off and the suspension seems to soak up more of the bumps. So, less of the dreaded "shakes."

Each actuator wire harness is connected to a harness on the car with a weather-pak connector. The front actuators are easy to remove with just a C-clip on the shock rod and the electrical connector. The rear actuators come off in the same way but the wire inside the frame rail must be secured to prevent it from falling down inside the frame rail. The front actuators are the same and the rears are the same. Actually the only difference between the front and rear actuators is the length of the wire harness on them. So there is no need to leave them on the car; just remove them and protect the connector on the car with tape.
The shocks can be rebuilt by Bilstein and they even offer custom valving for the shocks. You can get a great autocross valving setup or even track valving. Check with Bilstein in Poway CA (near San Diego) at 1-800-537-1085 and ask for Jack French.
The FX3 controller can be replaced by one from Doug Rippie that features a removeable PROM so you can even further fine-tune the shock operation by simply replacing the PROM.
