I am in the process of buying a hypertech programmer 111 for my LT4 there link says can only be used for 1 car "marries the car" has anyone bought a used one or borrowed one and had any problem. this is the link that says it won't work and my corvette mechanics says its won't but the seller has proved it by doing other cars? www.hypertech.com/faq.html
The only way to make the Hypertech programmer work on another car is to return the first car back to stock. These programmers work by first downloading the factory tune into the unit, and then uploading the Hypertech program into your car. It stores the VIN number along with this. If you try to install it on another car, it will sense that the factory tune is still stored in the unit along with the VIN and will not allow you to proceed.
But, as long as the person selling this unit has returned their car to the stock program, then yes you can install it on another car. Although, as many have stated... They will not gain you what you might think for as much as they cost.
Their link isn't really wrong. There just telling you that you and your friends can't pool your money together and buy one programmer and tune all your cars, that's all. Not sure I would trust buying a used one though and taking somebody's word that they returned their car to stock. On the other hand, from what everyone else in this forum has stated the performance gains you "might" get are not worth what a new hypertech programmer costs either.
Keep in mind, that these type of programmers work best on lower performance car/trucks. The Corvette already comes pretty well tuned from the factory. In other words, the higher the performance is from the factory, the less dramatic results you will see from a Mass produced programmer.
It does work great if you want your fans to come on at a lower temp or you've changed wheel size or rear end and need to calibrate your speedo. If you're getting it just for performance, I'd save a few bucks more and go elsewhere for a custom dyno tune.
