Well I was in the Chevy dealership getting my oil changed (in the process of getting my new house with my new garage, which is why I wasn't doing it myself) and I started BSing with one of the dealers. He told me he had a nice 96 'vette w/ only 28k on it and a..umm..lt4...I think (was how he put it) for 18k.
So I went out to look at it and it had the lt4 plate someone put in and said he got it on trade and it was a gs. But Something struck me as funny. It was polo green. Didn't the GS only come in admiral blue with the white stripe as a tribute to the older ones? Could that explain why the price was so low (I think it was low for a GS).
If I am right then I guess I should be upset the dealer tried to sell me a knockoff and really are slimeballs (unless he didn't know anybette, but come on)...whaddu you guys think? Sorry for the long post.
I'm not a Corvette Wizard but I have a 96 Coup and therefore look at almost every picture of a 96 I come across....Only seen the 96 GS in blue, twin red stripe on the left front, white stripes in center and black racing wheels. Believe I'm correct...
Thanks for such quick replies...good thing I found this site since after getting my vette I further delved into the world of everyone else's and apparently learned a thing or two. Oh-well, even when I do upgrade one day I will never trade in my 90 for another...I think I'm gonna start a collection
The GS was only produced in Admiral Blue with a white stripe down the center. The Collectors edition was sliver with silver emblems. The LT4 was an option for other 96 cars.
It may have been a '96 LT4. The LT4 throttle body says Grand Sport on it. So sometimes people with little Corvette knowledge call all LT4s Grand Sports. The LT4 was not an "option", All 6-speed '96's are LT4s and the automatics are LT1s.
Guys, it was just a 96 with a LT4 in it. All LT4 came with the GS TB plate
The ford dealer I got my lt4 from tried the same thing on their second e-bay ad. me and some friends(and I'm sure others) sent tons of emails setting them straight and they updated the advertisement.
However, they -still- got it wrong as somebody must have told them it was an LT1 cause that what they changed their ad to.
The dealer could be just playing dumb, but odds are, they don't know the difference either. Car salesmen, are salesmen first, and they might know something about cars second, if your lucky. At least thats my experience with them.
I don't see the need to "RUN AWAY" from this dealer. In some markets a low mileage LT4 in really nice shape could be worth the $18k he surmised. And that was just his starting point. I would look at it and consider an offer if I was in the market (and could afford) an LT4.
And tell him you "were born at night - it just wasn't LAST night."
I dont understand your post. why run. The dealer may or may not know, but all lt4's in 96 said GS on the throttle body whether it had the GS package or not.

very true - most "dealers" are really just "salespeople" who are still vastly wet-behind-the-ears wen it comes to Corvette trivia and lore
and for the GS's in the upper30-40 range, only at Rogers
Having been in the car business for several years, I tend to think he just saw the throttle plate and assumed. He probably DOES'NT know any better. It's impossible to keep up with all the different lines of all the different models of all the different makes. Especially from 11 years ago

If a CHEVY dealership can not tell the difference between a 96 LT4
and a real Grand Sport, I would not buy a car from them.
The Grand Sport is a car not a TB plate.
