Honestly i have no experiance with bigblocks in C4's

but let me tell you what i know.... Big Blocks cost a hell of a lot more money to build ub than your traditional small block... Plus not to mention they are alot heavier. Which is going to throw your handling way off so forget about handling if you choose to go that route... Just build a stroker motor or a blower motor and be done with it... You can put out simillar numbers with a small block as you can with a big block for less money. Big Blocks are just for bragging rights... It sounds more impressive.

My first question is, why? If you're after performance, there's no reason not to stick with what you have re: the block. With all the FI/stroker formulas and kits, I can't see any reason to not use the stock block.

In fact, I know at least one guy who swapped out his 454 smogger out of his C3 in favor of a hard-tuned 327, along with the front suspension. It was simply cheaper and easier to build a high-po small block than to re-invent the wheel with the low-comp smogger big-block.

Some people like to be different. Some people like to play with what they have. So give good advice as to the project and not the same old leave it as it is. I think you will have a lot of work on the frame to make it fit. I remember someone on here doing it, but it was mod city. Sorry I can not be more help. Randy

If you want bigblock with tuned port injcection you can look at the 1996-2000 Vortec 7400 intake. It is very slimilar to a CSB TPI and it is quite low profile. I don't know if it is low enough to clear the stock hood. Having the throttle on the side give you a lot more room at the front.

You need custom headers and that is probably your bigest problem.

You probably want to use the extra stiff 1984 Z51 front fiberglass spring.

I know it's not the same but back when I was in my twenties I had a 78 Z28, back then the 350 made like 175hp, anyway the first week end I owned it I put headers on it, the second week end it got a new intake, carb, and a cam, it took two more weeks to get a 100hp nitrous system, I still wasn't happy with the power and a guy came into the speed shop asking if we knew anyone that was looking for a 427 motor, duhh... It was an old 2 bolt out of a station wagon missing the pan and all externals. He backed his truck into my yard and we shoved it out the back and I tore it down, sent the block, crank, and heads out to the machine shop and bought a junk 396 for missing pan and hardware, put a low rise manifold, 850 double pumper, a good cam, lifters, and all on it and one sunny afternoon pulled the 350 and through in the 427, took about two hours to do, easiest thing ever. For the Z28 the motor mounts and everything transfered right over. The only problem was I had to run two different brands of headers to have all the clearance. With a low aircleaner on top I still had room for the nitrous plate under the carb and could close the hood, though later I sent the plate out to have it drilled for 200hp. I did end up pulling out the AC system to reduce the weight up front. and I cut the front springs to give me a better stance, also made the back spring a 5 pack instead of the three. When it was all done I had the most fun car I think I'll ever have, though the C4 comes close it needs more power. After a year of drag racing and doing stupid things the trans and rear end were shot and I put a Doug Nash T-10 tranny in and a used junk yard rear end from an old Nova with 2.56 gears in it but by then I was in Spain and could leagally run it up to some serious speed, fastest I had it was to 175mph, but it was geared for 200. At 175 she was floating!

Moral to the story? Have fun with the big block and if you are ever near Charlotte I want a ride!!

A second moral is that I'm also into sport bikes and for $10k I can get a bike that can do things a $100k car can't... My second car's a Yamaha R1...

You apparently don't have a lot of experience with a well built BBC.

There was a post a year ago with pics of someone doing this. The engine bay supported the BBC, and I recall the access to the plugs and such was no worse than our L98's.

Might check with ski_dwn_it

Actually the plugs are much easier to get to on the big block since they are between the header pipes as opposed to under them on the small block.

Look at your back issues of Corvette Fever, someone did the swap a while back, even makes a kit, you will probably need one of those tall hoods, or somekind of scoop to cover it.

You can always keep the weight down by using the ZL1 aluminum block that Chevy brought back.
