Default upper door trim question??

Hello all
Have a 88 coupe and the upper black trim on the doors has come loose.I think this is a common problem so there must be a way to repair them instead of replacing them. My trim is in otherwise perfect condition so I would like to keep them if I can. It looks like the plastic studs are broken where the speed nut goes.

Thanks much

Yes, the plastic studs broke off. You'll find that the new ones that the corvette parts suppliers sell come with metal studs intead. But they cost $100 each. Which is why I repaired my old ones.

What you need to do is remove the door panel. Then remove that upper trim that came loose and have it on a bench. Grind the broken off stud flat. Then drill a hole into the flat stud. Now you can put it back onto the door panel, and run a screw with a washer onto that hole you drilled. This will hold the upper trim panel on there solid.

I came up with a quick fix for my trim piece. I drilled a small hole through the trim piece and through a solid plastic tab behind the trim. Then I attached the trim to the panel with a small philips interior screw. It's been on for 4 years now. Here are a few pictures of what I did and it sure beats removing the panels. I did both sides to make it look symetrical. PM me if you have any questions and I hope this helps.

That would work too, but the thing I do not like about this method is that you end up with a screw head showing.

I just glued the trim piece to the door panel. There is no need for the trim to be removable. It fits tighter and looks better now.

I agree that it would look better with no screw. Just bear in mind that the picture is a flashlit closeup. The screw is hardly visible in natural light. I like the glue idea as well. I bet some heavy duty gorilla snot would really work great. Spending the kind of money they ask for the new trim pieces is crazy. I hope your repair turns out well.

i am working on my drivers sid edoor panel right now. had to change the inner and outer window sweeps. and my door panel was cracked all over the place. well i found some great stuff made by permatex, called perma poxy 5min plastic weld. only bad thing it stinks like the dentists office when it cures. but so fars its saved me buying door panels. they look fine from the side you see from in the car. well after putting on the inner window sweep i start putting that top skinny panel on and cracked off the center stud. so i glued it, i'll see how it goes?? and i'll glue the indie area of the panel to the door panel to be safe.

It's amazing how brittle most of the plastic parts are. I guess the engineers didn't realize how many of these cars would still be around 20 years after being manufactured.
