Climate Control Gone Wacky
I started the old girl up today for the first time in about 2 weeks. She's a 95 Coupe M6. When I did, the temperature readout only had a dot and 2 dashes and the defroster was blowing on high. I can't turn it off. I can't get or set a temperature. I can't do anything.
Any thoiughts what might be up with this? I checked the 2 fuses that are labeled as being for the fan and air, and they were both fine. Am I missing some other fuses to check, or is this something bigger?
Sounds like your control panel or programmer is bad - disconnect and reconnect the battery (and do make sure the battery is fully charged). That will reset internal memory and possibly get it working again. Otherwise, best to troubleshoot with a Tech 2 - it simply takes the place of the control panel and through the CCM connection, communicates directly with the programmer. If it all works, you need a new control panel. Unfortunately, that scan tool and the right cartridge are hard to come by - so see how much a dealer wants to do it for you.
See if you can pull codes first. Ign On. Press both up/down fan buttons at the same time until --- is displayed. Then push the fan button in the center to cycle through codes. When it displays --- again, you reached the end of the codes. For example an 09 indicates low freon. That is one possible cause for the symptom you described.
Wait to disconnect the battery first as it will clear the codes. Check codes first.

I had already tried the battery disconnect trick before I read the 2nd reply - but it worked. It's back to normal now. That's odd - I'll have to keep an eye on it.
If there's a system problem, such as low gas, it will come back. ECM monitors multiple inputs - cycling and pressure switches - to ground the compressor relay. Too much cycling or not enough/too much pressure will keep it from grounding the relay and set a code. Takes a little monitoring for it to happen (unless all the gas is pretty much gone), so if it comes back, follow the Jet Jockey's troubleshooting tip.
What you're seeing is - -- -- right? That's a default mode saying "I'm confused". Not getting the serial data it needs to make decisions. the C68 controller has two serial data inputs from the CCM, three dedicated inputs (sun-load, in-car temp and outside temp) and two shared data lines with the Bose CDM. There is probably an intermitent open or short in one of those connections, most likely the serial data from the CCM.

Yes, it was a dot and 2 dashes. Disconnecting the battery did seem to work, but I'll be watching it today. This is my last day before winter storage, snow is on the way here.
