The 1st gen AWD turbo Eclipse was the best one IMO. You could spend less than 2 grand and make them run 12s. But then something will eventually give and you'll be stuck with an addicting money pit. 2nd gen was a little prettier but the 7 bolt "revamped" 4G63 had problems with crank walk when pushed hard. The 3rd gen is probably the most pitiful of all generations, performance-wise. The top-of-the-line 4th gens probably won't be that bad with a 260 hp 3.8L V6. That's more hp than my Vette had in 89, but I know they'll be a light snack at the drag strip FWIW.
Hope your boy didn't get hurt. How fast was he driving and what was the curve like?
The boys were about 20 at the time.
It was a 95 model.
They (twins) didn't get hurt, just a little banged uo.
I would say going about 70mph, In Louisville Ky where 264E meets 64E, there is a curve with one of them concrete walls.
The car didn't hit head on, it slamed the wall after sliding sideways then it spun around and hit the other side of the car too. The pictured side was the worse though.
The whole car was maybe 6 inches more narrow, the floor had buckled up into the cabin also, every wheel was busted.
I just wouldn't like somebodys nephew racing in the mountains.
Thats one reason for that picture of the Eclipse.
Hi,
My nephew has an 01 or 02 eclipse v-6 manual trans, although we have never raced our cars, I have let him drive my 87 manual trans vette . when I asked about a race(not on the street) he said sure, if he could drive his dad's 95 LT1 vette....his eclipse is not a turbo but, it must not be too great because I see him and his wife in his dad's vette on a lot of sunday afternoons.
I just remembered we did do an auto cross at their church 1 time. He did beat me in the 87 with his eclipse. The people told me it was because the corse was set up closer for sport compact cars. It was really my lack of driving and shifting skills, and I have no depth perseption!! His dad had the 2nd best time of the day in the 95 lt1 loosing by less than half a second to a suberu wrx with soft compound racing tires.
Yep,the stage one mods put the GST(urbo) with approx 245 hp.It's FWD.The Mitsu hits the red @ 7,so it twists out around 6300.
My 85 is the DNE 4+3.
The S2k blushes at 9,so it's a real top end screamer. Not much off the line, but catches real fast at 6500.

Yeah stage 1 is a big step up from stock, relatively inexpensive and you'd also be running mid 12s @ 110 mph. I bet it is as easy as a newbie kid driver getting a nicely treated 90-92 Eclipse GSX AWD for $2000 and joining the DSMtuners website, spending $2000 more and running in Z06 territory. I bet it has happened more times than we think. Anyways, their cars will still be worth a dozen of aluminum beer cans in 10 years and when the turbos go, they'll be back to dog-slow territory.
Thanks everybody, great input from an above average group of people. No i dont want him getting hurt, and i sure dont want to hit any of the deer, elk, bear, or cougar that are every where around here, and i sure as hell, dont want to eat a log truck, since they own both sides of the road. I guess when the weather gets better i'll take him for ride in the 86 and he can make up his mind about it. We dont have any road courses any where near close and being a 40 year 1320 junkie, i'm sure not about to go back to the strip, i sold the last race car and all the parts this summer and i know better than go back. ...thanks and merry cristmas to all!
