I just bought a 96 LT1 and every once in a while it takes about 6-10 seconds to start up. I didn't know if it is normal but i had a Trans am with the same engine and i never had a problem with that. Do i need to replace the spark plugs or something? I just want it to start when i turn the ignition and not sound like it is a beater.

What's it doing that makes it sound like a beater?
My LT1 fires right up hot or cold,(and I do mean cold) so something is not right with yours. Post some details/signs and symptoms and someone here will have the answer.
it is cold here but i don't know if that is the problem. it is stock but has 100,000 miles on the engine. I just had all the fluids changed.
The thing that makes it sound like a beater is that it just won't start. You know those cars that just sit there trying to turn over but just can't. Mine is like that but does eventually in about 6 sec. I can live with it but i would like to know what it might be and what i have to do to fix it.
Could be a lot of things and your description is too generic.First check your fuel pressure on the pass side schrader valve.Put a guage on it turn the key on and check the pressure.Turn it off and see if it holds. If both pass tape it to the windsheild and drive the car.If it drops too much it may be fuel filter. You need to tell us the history of the car and when and what maintence has been done (besides oil)if you know it ,we are not auto mind readers.
Another possibility is the IAC is dirty or sticking. There is a hole between the blades in the TB that you can shoot some TB cleaner in a few times or you can look in the tech tips for the TB cleaning procedure I suggest you do this also.
If you plan on working on your car read all the stickeys at the top of the General and Tech forums lotsa good info in there......

Sell hello to my little friend .... "optispark"
Try heating the opti up with a hairdryer and see if it will crank and stumble. YOU NEED AN OPTI . Opti - plus waterpump at good garage = $1200
I just bought the car and i am by far no mechanic. I believe that it was sitting in the guys garage for about 2 years not running much. He said he had it out some but i would assume not very often. I would say that nothing has been done other then me changing the fluids. I really can't tell you much other then that. Other then it tries to start and there is a new battery. I would guess it is something electrical but what do i know.
Does the fuel pump come on for 2 seconds when you turn the key to on (not start)? If not, the pump relay is probably shot. If if does come on, check the pressure, it should come up fast when the pump primes, if not, change the filter. If that doesn't help you may need a new pump or the strainer sock on the pump is plugged up.
Also do a complete tuneup on the car...plugs, wires and posibly ignition module/coil.

Fuel system check is due.It will start if the relay is bad after it cranks enough to make the oil pressure enable the fuel pump.
I started it today and it did it again in the cold. Then when i drove it for a while and started it again it started right up. So i would say that it happens when the engine is cold.
Let us know what you find when you do what we suggested.
In addition to what is suggested, turn the key forward and listen for the fuel pump to come on. Wait the 2 seconds, then turn the key all the way forward and tell us how long it takes to start. Make sure you do this when cold.
Okay. The fuel pump comes on when i turn the key but don't start the car. It still took about 3 seconds for it to turn over. I think it helped it but it was in my garage all night so i will put it out and try it when i know it is really cold. I am planning on replacing the fuel filter and seeing if that works.
And the pressure is?
Did it leak down quickly?
It seems the throttle body could use a good cleaning.Check the tech tips.If it is sticking or dirty it can cause this.Letting the fuel rail charge up before turning it over is what you did and it is the way these cars should be started.Throwing parts at a problem is never the way to fix it altough a methodical step by step maintenance program is best.Read the owners manual for recommended change intervals.A fuel filter will not cause your problem but should be changed every 25k anyway.

i would have to take it to a mechanic to check the pressure and everything since i am not very good at that sort of thing. I guess if i have to in order to fix the problem then i will. if you think of something easy i can do that might help let me know and i will try it.
