I dismounted the rear differential and opened it up to inspect the gear teeth. All is fine and i'm going to keep the stock setup but I noticed there is no gasket. What kind of mating sealer do I use to plug them back together?
You will get many opinions on this. My silicone of choice is Permatex Ultra Copper. It is the only sealer that has not let me down yet. The real key is the prep. Scrape it spotlessly clean, make sure it is abolutely clean. I use laquer thinner for this step. Then apply rtv, give it a few minutes to flash, but not skin over. Install batwing and torque to spec. I always let it sit for 24 hrs to let it cure. Longer if in cold weather. Then I fill the fluid.

Permatex's "The Right Stuff." A Permatex rep told me it is better than their best silicone products with several times the service life, as well as better sealing. Their two best silicones, in descending order, are Ultra Gray and Ultra Black. Ultra Gray contains ceramic particles to make the cured product extra durable.

I almost forgot. He also told me that gear oil attacks sealers more than any other automotive petro product. The Right Stuff is more resistant to that, too. Whatever you use, let it set up before refilling with lube. 24 hours, or at least overnight with silicones. The Right Stuff can be put into service much more quickly.
