My understanding is the stock Delco radio had the speakers in the dash, the Bose system had them in the doors. Mine are in the doors, you can fit 6 1/2 in there.
I purchased a componet speaker set. I removed my old amplifier and placed my new crossover in the door.
To remove the old aplifier I had to remove the door panel, kind of a pain
My tweeter is mounted on the side of the door next to speaker out of the way.
I have a 5.5 in speaker in the door.
It sounds very good set up like this.
The speaker covers on the dash do not come off easily, remove dash pad if you are going this route.
the dash pad comes off in 5- 10 min and the grills have screws from the underside. GM put 4x6" speakers in the dash before the Bose systems came out. Mounting the tweets that far from the mids may blur the staging a bit but not much.

Could you kindly give a quick process list as to how to remove the pad? What needs to come off, or better yet, where is it bolted down?
There are 5? screws at the front edge of the dash pad behind the guage bezel and 3 behind the center bezel,if you look at the top of the center bezel you can see the screws. You can get a 4 by 6 in the dash but its not easy.Ive got a set in my dash. .........
