I recently got my first vette, it only took about 45 years. It is a 95 model and very much stock and daily driver, I plan to keep it that way.
I have replaced the opti-spark, front ceramic brake pads, rear transverse spring, and other minor stuff. BUT, one thing is driving me nuts--sometimes I have difficulty getting the transmission of out of park, and yes it is an automatic. Shifter button just won;t depress.
I pulled the console cover and everything seems in good working order.
I can see what appears to be a solenoid connected to the shifter plate, also cable that goes around under dash and hooks to some linkage by steering column. Anyone out there run into similiar problem? Or at least know what/how/when/why the solenoid and cable activate and do?
Thanks for any help. PS--Love the vette and wish I had it years ago.
Welcome to the forum and congrats on the new purchase. I believe as the brake pedal is depressed is actuates the shifter release. I would highly recommend that you buy a Helms manual for the car as soon as you can. It will help you alot as will the members of the forum.
Thanks, I have the GM manual, and of course the owners manual, even the original window sticker for the vette. Guess I can't read anymore. The owner's manual tells the obvious=key on, brake depressed. The shop maunal shows how to replace the solenoid, and also the cable, but doesn't really say what each of them does, or "guess I can't read anymore". Thanks for the reply, I will keep looking for the cause of the problem.

The cable must be stretched or otherwise out of adjustment. When you have the shift console off, push on the brakes and look for the cable that unlocks the shift button.
Yup, the cable seems free and in good shape. It would be pushing on the shift linkage in order to release the lock button, as when it does unlock the cable is pulled out. I will have to lock at shop manual again, I am guessing that the cable actually goes over and releases the steering wheel lock. By process of elimination that leaves the solenoid. Maybe depressing the brakes puts power to a relay, in turn activating the solenoid and releasing the shift button and ergo the steering wheel? Just trying to think this thing thru and running it up the flagpole? Your response most certainly appreciated, thanks, Andy
