Default engine replacing

Hi,
I'm just starting to get interrested in getting an old, or 'classic' vette, to make it more affordable. Something in the 80s range seems the most affordable. What I am wondering though, is if I end up getting a vette and for some reason I want to replace the engine, what engines would I be able to swap in there?
Do you think that the newer 5.3 liter would go in there?
Some other less desirable options I was thinking of were the older design of the 5.7, and the higher liter, but current Vette engines (like the LS2, or LS7 )which would require ordering factory direct, or buying from a wrecked vette.

Well anyway, tell me what you think,
and if any of you have been to the auto show,
tell me, because I was there today

Thanks,
Dan

I don't think anyone has made a swap kit yet to put the C5 or C6 engine in the C4. They mount differently and there is no interface available for the computer controls.
You could get a crate motor from GM but the least expensive way is to buy one from a Corvette boneyard such as www.vette2vette.com or www.contemporarycorvette.com
You did not list a home town in your profile so we don't know where you live. Are you talking about the Detroit show? If you are then I have seen some nice pics in the local paper but did not actually go.
