Default Hood Emblem

I bought new emblems for my 1986 Vette. The gas lid was easy. How do I deal with the hood emblem though? It doesnt' seem to have bolts that hold it in place? How do I get the old one off without causing damage and how does the new one stay in place? The new one has no threads...is this normal?

There are self tapping nuts on the back side of the emblem. With the hood up, they are accessed thru 2 small holes on the underside of the hood. After removing them, take masking tape and tape up the area around the emblem and also the inside painted area of the emblem. Using a hair dryer, heat the emblem to help release the double sided tape. I use an old credit card or popsickle stick to gently push the emblem up. You must work the tape well though. Some guys have used fishing line as well.

I just removed the emblems of my 87.

There are 2 nuts to the hood emblem, you can reach em´ with the hood open, there are 2 holes in the back of the hood...

Your old emblem may also have some glue that holdes it in place...
Gently heat the emblem area, But EASY you dont wanna hurt the paint... a hairdryer perhaps...

If the emblem is really tight on, you could use some nylon string, like from fishing equipment, and gentley get it down between hood and emblem..

Mine however came of easy, with just to 2 nuts in the hood.

Put a little Vaseline or something sticky in the socket when removing the nuts. That will stop them from falling out of the socket when you remove them. When you put them back on same thing dab of Vaseline and the nuts will cut new threads on the new Emblem.

Excellent point. I installed the newer 91 and up emplems on my 87. I tought they were better looking on my black coupe. The new style are plastic. Therefore I did not use the nuts, only the factory applied double stick tape. Pipe has good advise.

I know how to access it but I didn't feel anything that was holding it in place. I can see the openings under the hood. The new one that I have for the hood doesn't have any threads...I was wondering if I should return it since there aren't any threads?

I have a '90, and last summer I purchased both emblems as well, the "older style" metal ones.

One thing I did was to leave the protective film over top the sticky two-sided adhesive tape in tact on the emblems. In other words, I simply bolted the emblems on. That way, they will come right off easy, next time they ever need replaced. They have been bolted on a good 6-9 months now, and are on good & solid. Just food for thought.

Have a look at my first reply. The nuts are self tapping. No worries there.

Like mentioned. The nuts off your old one will cut new threads automatically onto the emblem posts. Have a look at this. There are pictures:

I did the exact same thing as HotRod90 did on my 90 vert.

You might snag one of those little round mirrors off one of the tool trucks and with a MiniMag lite, scope things out from the motor bay with the emblem installed through the holes.

That'll give the motor area of your brain something to shoot for. No kiddin'.

Good luck, Man. Piece of cake. (Especially compared to a heater core r&r.)

Yes, the nuts will cut new threads on the emblem posts. On my 86 I had the same problem with not being able to see the nuts. This was because they were not there at all. The only thing holding the emblem on was the sticky tape backing. The self tapping nuts can be found at any Home Depot or Auto parts store.

The main reason I left the nuts off my emblem was to prevent serious damage if some punk kid tried to yank the emblem off the car. Robbing hood embems on any high end car is common here. My buddy just lost the emblem on his Benz.

Default Remove the circle?

My preference is to remove the circle from around the emblem. To me it makes the hood look much wider. You might try that with your old emblem and put it back on to see what it looks like and then you can either remove the circle or leave it on with the new one.

What I really prefer is the tear drops that they put on the Callaway 'vettes in place of the front emblem, but Callaway will not sell them to me.

Be careful. I unknowingly had my hood emblem on without the nuts and just with the adhesive backing. After years of having it that way, it came flying off the hood at 80 MPH and smacked the windshield hard. I was driving against the wind and I guess the wind got under the emblem and blew it off.

Yep. I would not do it with the old style, heavy, metal emblem. The later years (91 and up) had a feather weight emblem made of plastic. I am not worried about it flying off. It should fly about 100ft strait up at 100mph

Sounds like a great idea. I may hack up and old emblem to get a good look.

One other thing to remember is to have someone apply pressure to the old emblem while you remove the bolts in case the adhesive is dried out or missing. This will prevent the metal emblem from falling on the nose possibly damaging the paint.
