Was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on adding octane boast to the fuel or any type of additive. It seems that some people say to do it and others say its useless.
Octane boost is not cost effective but putting a can in will make it run a little better(at least mine does).
Techron and Seafoam seem to be the most used around here for gas additives.Techron and a new coil just got done clearing up my slight miss at idle.Must have had some fouling on a plug or two.Coil was arcing from intermittant contact.
I started using different brands of octane boosters when I first started drag racing in the early 90's. They would crud up the plugs. No real gain, in my case.
I always put the highest octane gas in my car, which is 90 here. sure its the same everywhere. just didnt know if adding anything made any difference or not. BTW this is my first corvette, first sports car period, so just want to ask plenty of questions to make sure i dont mess anything up or add any cost that is useless.

The problem with high octane fuel is if they get that octane by adding alcohol, which is bad. I use regular and additive. Apparently the mix depends on where you live, and the time of year.
I just got a tank of bad gas from my Sunoco so did my son.He uses 87 I use 93 do they mix 94 and 87 to make 93?Reguardless I now drive 1/2 hr to a Shell they are "Top Tier" vendors.

I use Techron additives. I don't think it helps much but it won't hurt any.

Actually, My '90 manual calls for an octane rating of atleast 92. The highest octane rating out here is 91. I still add octane, but the only thing the octane really does is prevent knock. If you're hitting the recommended numbers, your car should knock and/or retard the timing. What alot of the octane boosters out there do is done with other additives like nitro methane to act as performance boosters. I can tell you they work better than not having them in at all in my case. I use NOS brand formulas primarily with each full tank considering all the watered down bs I often get from hindi-owned gas stations around town. BTW, that's considering I ALWAYS get nothing less than premium at any gas station I go to.
When I first got my Vette.....it had a horrible knock... I figured the cheap-o dealer put regular gas in it.. The ONLY time I have ever used an octane booster was then (I bought two bottles and put them in - most of the knock was gone - so it would seem it works). I always use 93 Octane and the Vette runs fine on that. - - - The only fuel additive I swear by is SeaFoam - it is great stuff.

octane is usually dependent on compression ratio, so unless a blower/turbo or an accelerant like nitrous is added the octane called for is ok. Unless of course the engine has been changed to raise comp ratio. that's not to say pump gas is clean particularly, I go for Amoco Ultimate whenever possible. In a heavily boosted car octane/fuel quality is life or death. If the car is spark knocking under light acceleration, it's probably a timing/EGR issue.
If anybody with a vette has a carbon buildup problem

I bought Gumout Octane Booster from walmart because I like looking at that type of stuff. Don't know what any of it really means but I buy it anyway and it cured the knock problem and runs better a WOT.
