Default Coolant temp switch

Has anyone tried using the aftermarket coolant temp switch. You can get one that turns fans on at 200 and shuts off at 180.

For as hot as C4's run, the aftermarket thermostatic switch you describe would turn on the auxilliary fan at 200 F and would likely keep it on as the coolant temperature wouldn't likely fall below 180 F with a 180 F thermostat in the engine. 200 F is too low a temp for the auxilliary fan to come on as the main fan doesn't come on until 228 F.

It wouldn't run while the car's warming up to 200 degrees (sometimes 15+ minutes). Then, even if it ran all the time, I've seen it claimed that the stock radiators are "inadequate". So, why not provide constant, additional cooling at a lower price/effort than replacing the radiator and/or water pump? Moreover, you need air moving across the radiator to provide good cooling. That's why cars get hotter when not moving!

Then, if/when it gets to 228, the primary fan would kick in to help.

Don't expect it to work as intended if you keep a 180 stat in there with it. It might work with a 170.

Why bother with the aux fan? It's small and is an unshrouded pusher fan. Use the big fan.

If it's so inadequate, why did Chevy install them at all?

I put one in my car along with a 160 deg.thermostat.
The only change I made was to have both fans come
on at 200 deg. No problems yet.

Backup to the big fan for high temps. Basically, if you're only gonna use one fan, use the good one!

Why ride your scooter to work on the freeway when you have a fullsize car in the garage?

Good points, I installed my Ecklers 200 fan switch late last week on my 86 and I run a 195 Stat since its winter. That poor little auxilary fan stays on pretty much the whole time trying to keep 200 degrees. Unless I am moving at around 30 miles per hour or more it hangs around 185-200. Loud little sucker too!!! In the summer I will swap out thermo to 160. But for now, the "heavy duty cooling package" will work its butt off.
