I have an 86 with the original rims. The Lug Nuts have that strange setup - with threads on the outside. Was this the set-up for all C-4's. How nessisary/important are they?.
Can they be safely replaced with any lugnut with the tapered shoulders? and can I buy em at Kragen or is a communist plot by GM - I bet the dealers are getting a mint for these things!

Pretty much a standard GM design for any Alloy wheel that have the black plastic cap that fits over the lug nut.
Any parts store will carry them (I've bought both the lug nuts and the plastic caps at Napa and Autozone).

That's what I was thinking... but didn't the 86 have a lug/wheel cap to hide the nuts and studs (sorry I had to say it). Unless I am mistaken, the 86 did not need those type lug nuts.
(I may need to stand corrected... but I can't find a good pic of an 86 with stock rims to verify my comment).

If he has the '84-'86 Turbines, he has Black Plactic caps that screw-on over the nuts and studs (you're welcome) as shown in jrp's post above.
Thanks for the info guys - and yes I do have the turbine style wheels!
youre answers may have helped me solve the mystery that is haunting me. 3 of my wheels are sans lug nut caps. The 4th has what I have assumed to be a different lug nut style - so I was going to replace it. But now - if someone put a set of chrome covers on 1 set of lugs - That would explain it.
However - 1 problem - when I take that particular wheel off - I use a different size socket to remove the lugs - so would a capped lug come off as one piece? If so - would you use another wrench to take off the original lugs?
My 93 came with two socket adapters. 1 is for the wheel locks and the other is used to take of the lug nuts or the plastic caps. I have not tried to take them off so i don't know for sure?

The caps are removed from the lug nut first, they are just plastic. Mine (on a '96) have the same size hex as the lugs - they are also plated, so I usually use a plastic bag in the socket/wrench to keep them from getting damaged.
The earlier years' caps may have a different hex size, if that's what you meant. I don't know for sure. If you meant that those lug nuts take a different socket than the ones on the other 3 wheels, then you have an interesting situation going on.

AND DON'T USE ANY AMOUNT OF FORCE TO TAKE THE CAPS OFF!!! ie - impacts or power tools. They are plastic and strip out or crack very easy. Also don't put them back on in that fashion either.

Come to think of it, it would be impossible not to take the caps off first anyway. They are threaded in the same direction.

Ah crap - that means I have different style lug nuts - so I'll just replace em with OEM style - I wont put caps on - visual inspection capability is required during safety inspections for the race orgs i run with!

Just as with the newer ('90s) lugs and caps, the older ('80s)caps and lugs are the same size. (Think of it this way, the tire wrench only came in one socket size)
'House Of Wheels' sells chrome capped lugnuts with a locking feature that work really well and look good with your wheels, for about $20.00. I have them on my 2000 C-5 wheels. Those plastic caps are a PITA.

Yah - but I need to be able to see the lugs and the thread- SCCA rules
