Back in 93 I bought my first Vette. It was an 89 dark red metallic. I still vividly remember the day I drove it off the lot. I had it for several years and when I got out of the Army I sold it. I did not know what kind of job I would have and didn't want to be stuck with the payments. From 95 until December 2005 I drove by hundreds of Vettes, C4s, C5s and C6s and wondered about the day (if it ever came) that I would have a Vette again. After a failed marriage and remarriage to a good one this time I bought a 97 C5 in December. I love the C5. I think it is superior to the C4 (don't flame me please). I still have a place in my heart for that 89. My question is that the C4 drivers seem to be hostile toward the C5 crowd. I would like to know why so I don't do anything that pisses C4 drivers off. I check the C4 side often as I still love the C4 and think its an incredibe car. No flames please. Just honest opinion.
The C5 should be superior to the C4 - technology should only get better. I guess the owners of C5's that I know are no different than owners of the C4's. Most of the C5 people had a C4 at one time or other. Without the developments of the C4 ---- the C5 wouldn't be.
I currently have an 89 - love it. I'm sure if I ever drove a C5 - I would tell you it was a better car -------- but instead -------- of buying a C5 to go with my C4 -------- I recently bought a C3 ('72).
In my opinion, a Corvette is a Corvette. Some years may be better than others to some people, but they're all great cars. I see C3's, C4's, C5's, and C6's all the time and i've never seen any disrepect towards anyone else. I personally love my '85 coupe.
I agree. I love all Vettes. Each model gets better and that is what keeps Corvette going. I am sure the C6 is better than my C5 but right now I can't afford one. I would love to have my 89 back along with my C5.
I joined a great group of folks in Ft Worth, Texas to sign Grumpy's hat last week and I was the only C4 there. The time there I never felt anything but good company. As we were leaving I was invited to sit in the drivers seat of a C6 and the C5 guys were great. Some of them were previous C4 owners.
What impressed me the most was that I never sensed any "I am better then you attitudes". From this experience I will not hesitate to hook up with them again. Then again they are CF members, which are known to be a great group of people. Non-members might be different, I don't know.

It's not all C5/6 owners, it's a select few... Like bad cops and bad lawyers, bad Vette owners give the group a bad rap...
The only time I've ever had a problem with a C5 owner was when I was told I own a C4 because I can't afford a C5...
As long as you treat others with respect, you get respect in return... There are people in this world though that have to show their perceived superiority to you... This doesn't just go for Corvette ownership, but every aspect of life...
I've always wanted a Corvette and a C4 was the only thing I could afford. Got mine for a steal at $5000. Maybe someday i'll get a newer one... if i have to
Its personal preference. I woudnt mind owning a C5, but the thing that keeps me from doing it is I wouldnt bve happy with it stock as they have so much power potential. AFR head/cam package, 4.10s, LT's, etc they become a driveable 11 sec. beast.
A VERY expensive one. So for now I stick with the cheap to maintain/mod C4. Enjoy the C5.
Im 21, been driving my 86 for about 9 months now. As soon as i was informed about the 'corvette wave' (waving while keeping hand on top of the steering wheel), i never relized what a tight-nit crowd the corvette owners were. When driving by another c4 or earlier, there is no doubt that i get a wave, thumbs up, etc. I hardly ever receive a return wave from a c5/c6.
I seems to me like c4 owners have one cause they love the heritage, and c5/c6 owners have one as a statement of their paycheck. And with each new model comes more advanced electronics and engine technology, and less oppertunity for your average home mechanic (like me) to maintain/modify.
I seems to me like c4 owners have one cause they love the heritage, and c5/c6 owners have one as a statement of their paycheck.
I only agree with that to a certain extent. Just keep in mind that when the C4 first came out, there were people that just wanted it because it was the latest and greatest American sports car. Many of them didn't care about any previous year Corvette. Actually, that's really no different than any other brand of car.
When it comes right down to it, I would take any generation vette.
I absolutely have no problem with the C5, if i could've afforded it at the time, I probably would've bought a c5 instead of a c4.
I have no problem with owners of any other gens... The only problem i have is when someone thinks he/she is better than someone else just because they have a more expensive, newer car. So, that inevitably encompasses various c5 and c6 owners.
I love them all to be honest. C4 was always the vette I wanted when I was in high school. I would have loved to have a 69 or any of the crome bumper C3's but the C4's just seemed like a spaceship back in those days.
I have an 89 now and I have never had a bigger smile while driving.

Think of Corvette Chief Engineer Dave Hill as Former President Bill Clinton. Someone who is very worried about public opinion, and makes their decisions based on what the polls say. Now I don’t mean this as a criticism to Dave Hill. He and his team did a wonderful job in saving the Corvette in the development of the C5. Just read All Corvettes Are Red.
Hill and the team did seriously consider complaints about the C4 in their design of the C5. Thus completing a more “user friendly” version of the Corvette that appeals to a wider range of people. Many who were not previous Corvette owners to begin with. So there are a lot of new Corvette people with the C5 who simply don’t know or understand the Corvette heritage.
My question is that the C4 drivers seem to be hostile toward the C5 crowd. I would like to know why so I don't do anything that pisses C4 drivers off.
The only animosity towards C5 drivers I've seen here in the 15 months or so that I've been a CF member is in direct response to a derogatory comment from the C5 driver...or a real/perceived negative attitude towards C4's and C4 drivers.
You see, coming to a C4 forum and saying...
I love the C5. I think it is superior to the C4 (don't flame me please).
...isn't likely to help you build any goodwill with a bunch of C4 drivers. You clearly realize this since you apologize for it, but you say it anyway.
There are vette owners and there are vette enthusiasts..you will always get a wave and a kind word from a vette enthusiast...the vast majority of C4 and earlier owners are enthusiasts...a few C5 and C6 owners simply bought a vette for the name or snob appeal...these are the folks that get under the enthusiasts skin a bit...
I don't worry about it at all...I'm a car guy so I respect anyone's ride if they are into their car and take care of it...
Seems to me like the C5 crowd is changing a little bit now that the C6 has been out for a while. Once the C5 could only be bought as a used car I think a lot of the "snobby" owners moved on to the C6...so you're left with a lot of great Corvette people. Just my experience so far.
[Edit] Here is the only time I've been talked down to in the C5 section, which I've only posted in a handful of times:
"You sir, need to get out more and stop lurking here all the time, and by OUT, I don't mean come OUT of C4 forum to post in C5 like you just did "
I don't really have a big problem with C5 owners. I wave, they don't, I drive on and shrug it off a bit. I guess it is just because they have not really been around crowds of people who own Corvettes and explain why it is. Some (not even most..) C5 owners drive the C5 for the name and not the family. I love my C4 because I know I have another family, now!
But to be honest with you:
When I go to the local car show on Friday nights, I see more C5 owners freaking out about the C4s than any of the other Corvettes
We may pay less for our cars, but we have more money in the long-run to make them amazing and to fit our own personal needs. I am ok with that!
