Default Adhesive clarification

My apologies for bringing up a subject that I know has been covered many times, but I gotta ask. I'm ready to replace the headliner in my 90 coupe. I have the material and I picked up a can of 3M adhesive, that states it is for headliners. However, reading through older posts here, and on another forum, there are comments about how well the 3M holds up. Some say it lets go in the heat. A product called "Heads-Up" is recommended. I've not seen the "Heads-UP" product in my area. Since I only want to do this once, I figured I'd let those more knowledgable than I set me straight. So before I open the can of adhesive,

1. Will the 3M product hold up? It is the "general use" adhesive. There is another 3M adhesive that is listed for heavy headliners. I didn't think my headliner fell into that category so I bought the regular.

2. Should I take it back and search for the Heads-Up product? It's been metioned that it is available from Pep-Boys, but I don't think I have one around here.

3. Any other adhesive that will work?

Thanks much.

I've use both for headliners with some and limited success. When I did my 85 Vet, I was able to remove the old headliner from the roof panel. After removing the cloth I noticed a pad that was held onto the roof with velcro. I pulled this off and took both the pad and top to an upholstery shop. The shop quoted me something like $25 for a new headliner which was basically gluing some new cloth to the pad and installing it back into the top. It was a no brainer for me. I've subsequently installed a headliner in my El Camino. Similar installation but with a thinner hard foam pad to glue the headliner material to. I used the 3M spray on it per the instructions. Looked great for a long time. It's sagging now. Don't know if its due to the adhesive or prep. I'll try it again. I'm certain the shops use a different type of spray adhesive. It's similar to 3M, maybe it's just a heavier duty type because I've seen them apply it with regular siphon feed paint guns.

I've used 3M for over 30 years, and I've been satisfied with it.
Coupla' tips for you:

3M makes several types of aerosol fabric contact adhesives...be sure you get the best one for the job.
Then, use it EXACTLY as the directions specify.

My local parts place had two types of 3M adhesives, both said in their application data that they would work for headliners. The only differences was one stated it was for "heavy weight" headliners, it is yellow (other being clear) and costs $2 more. I almost bought it (the $2 bucks didn't bother me, the color made me think though), but didn't consider my headliner a "heavy weight" candidate.
